If they're informed by CNN at this level of crisis room decision-making instead of having a direct feed to helicopter surveillance in the vicinity they're not going to be making good decisions.
not like they were going to make good decisions anyway
maybe it's more like: if a cop openly murders someone that's no big deal, but if a cop openly murders someone live on CNN, that's something they need to know about so they can start doing damage control and looking up the victim's "no angel" record. I dunno, spitballing
