It's... Bloomed? Multiple times (see background) pile of chipped wood, zone 8 US.

I bet you could get some cool footage if you put a time lapse camera on it.

Last time I found one, I did this. You can really see the movement with a time-lapse. It's like it's breathing slowly - expanding and contracting. I got so fascinated it took a while to notice the oyster mushrooms right next to it.
