from the team:

Hey everyone! 👋

We’ve been hard at work behind the scenes, and with spring in full swing, we wanted to share a few recent Proton VPN updates that we think you’ll appreciate. These aren’t flashy new features — just thoughtful improvements to make your online life smoother, safer, and more efficient.

🛡️ NetShield is now even better at blocking phishing sites

Worried about accidentally clicking a sketchy link? We’ve expanded the list of known phishing domains NetShield blocks — so now it stops more bad stuff before it even has a chance to load. Just turn on NetShield in the app, and you’re good to go.

🔋 Battery life improvements for mobile users

We’ve improved how Proton VPN runs in the background on both Android and iOS. If you're on the move using a cellular connection, the app will now let your phone rest more when idle, meaning less power drain and longer battery life.

Some quick tips for even better battery life:

  • Use WiFi when you can (uses less power than mobile data)

  • Switch to WireGuard (lightweight and battery-friendly)

  • Don’t stress about using lots of data — that barely affects battery usage

Faster browsing when conditions aren’t perfect

Proton VPN has always been fast, but now it’s smarter too. If your connection is being slowed down due to certain network quirks, the app can detect and automatically fix it in real-time so you get the fastest connection speed available. No manual tweaking needed.

We know “invisible” updates aren’t as exciting as shiny new features, but these kinds of tweaks make a huge difference day-to-day — and they’re all part of our mission to keep improving the VPN experience.

Let us know how these updates are working for you, or if you’ve noticed a difference!

The CEO 6ish months ago, ignorantly tweeted an approval of a specific Trump appointee. So a few now believe Proton to be ride or die MAGA. Which is silly, considering it's a Swiss company run by scientists.

considering it's a Swiss company run by scientists.

This is just a marketing plug, it is a legal entity that profit seeks. First and foremost.

so are proton services still ok to use? its still open-source right??

[–] KarnaSubarna@lemmy.ml 2 points 16 hours ago

Proton client is open-source? yes.

Their server side code is independently audited? yes.

So, no issue in my Pov. But, "a company run by scientist" - that's a bit stretching the truth, I would say.

[–] lud@lemm.ee 2 points 23 hours ago

In my opinion yes.

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 1 points 1 day ago

the product it self is fine to use as of now is the current consensus.

hopefully "leadership" got the hint who butters their bread.

with that being said, you deff should not be using them as suit ie don't put your eggs in one basket like we did we google and apple.

in case if anything, happens, you can reasonably easily switch. got to stay nimble.

Is that why they restructured so it's primary shareholder is now the non-profit Proton Foundation?

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

OpenAI was structured in a similar way too until it wasnt.

I really don't get adult people defending corporate esp on Lemmy haha

Do you work there or you just spend your free time defending other man's businesses for free?

[–] Steve@communick.news 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

OpenAI is still structured that way. It's unclear they'll be able to change it.

You seem to be imbuing my comments with your own assumptions. If you think I'm defending "corporate", I'll encourage you to reread with a more literal POV.

I don't do either, but as much as I doubt it, the accusation makes me wonder if you work at Tutanota. Every accusation is an admission and all that.

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't shill for corpos ever because they are inherently the enemy of the working class.

So I don't understand why anyone would ever give them the benefit of a doubt.

[–] Steve@communick.news 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Again, that had nothing to do with anything I said.
It also, most notably, wasn't a direct denial of what I said.

So a few now believe Proton to be ride or die MAGA. Which is silly, considering it's a Swiss company run by scientists.

This was the original comment. You went out of your way to downplay Proton's regime whore's commentary and bootlicking of trump admin. You then proceed to imply that because it is "run by scientists." as some sort of: trust me bro, these are the good guys.

I highlighted that you are invoking their marketing materials and it is not relevant to how "honest/good" they are. Then it devolved in whatever this is.

Bottom line, this is a profit seeking parasite and people should treat it as such along with the rest of them. Use/pay them for the service but these people are not your fucking friends, never were, never will be. A corpo is not a person, it is a mechanism for owner class to generate wealth and limit liability for any misconduct that happens when they get too greedy.

[–] Steve@communick.news 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 22 hours ago) (1 children)

In general we agree. But your black and white interpretation, causing you to shit on even those doing the best anyone could expect, is infantile bordering on comical.

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

causing you to shit on even those the best anyone could expect

Are you talking proton? If so, that was true prior Andy's bootlicking. Now proton is going to be treated with the rest of them. It is pretty obvious Andy does not understand his core user base imho

[–] Steve@communick.news 3 points 1 day ago

I'm done. This is dumb
