Illustrator is used for a lot of things other than illustration, so I wouldn't recommend blender to replace it but if you're thinking about 2d animation, ironically blender3d is one of the best 2d animation software out there. and very powerful since it can be used strictly 2d or in conjunction with its 3d capabilities that open up lots of possibilities.
