I am not a statistician so I can't authoritatively say their data is bunk, but this looks more like a nice shotgun pattern than correlative data
This is how a lot of statistical data. The correlation coefficient is low, but it’s still correlation (but maybe not causation)
You gotta look at that graph from the other side of the room...
