This was in a Costco magazine. The family used ""savings"" to start this business and then later got a military contract with the US. I wonder where that savings came from? Perhaps more family lore?

Herman Leopold Ludwig Eugene Hans Heinz Bonatz was his name. Likely named his son Hans. You can't even find out where Heinz passed away in 81. Hans being 19 in post war means he was probably born in the twenties

Hans was an exceedingly common name in that time. I personally knew two people named Hans who were born in that period and I considering I was born in the 90s, I don’t exactly know that many people from that time. And Bonatz doesn’t seem to be an all too uncommon name either, considering there is six people in the German Wikipedia with that last name, none of them being Hans Bonatz or being related.
They fled "post war nazi Germany" to south Africa. I'm sure that Hans is very common name but the reasonable doubt you are presenting does not betray the title of this post and is absolutely suspicious.
Heinz was born in '97, Hans would be born in '26 to be 19 in '45, which would mean Heinz was 29 when Hans was born - just the right age to be his father.
I could be wrong, but the timeline works out.
