o7 rip Discord, you wont be missed.
I mean I’ll miss it. Current FOSS options are not up to par
I like Matrix, but it isn't exactly the easiest platform to use and definitely has some jankiness with voice/video calls.
Revolt is pretty good! Most of the features you want from discord are already there. It's FOSS and servers can be self-hosted.
Revolt has been super dead every time I use it. I can’t get a feel for it because any communities I find with any chatter usually go silent within a month
The public servers that are just operating on discovery - sure. I have a private Discord with friends I'll be looking to transfer, as well as a community with external intake sources.
I mean it’s also not federated. That’s got to hurt
Maybe for this crowd. Almost no services I use aside from email were federated, before I went to Lemmy and Mastodon. And now it's email, Lemmy, and Mastodon. Average users just chasing a good experience don't really care about federation, despite its benefits.
They care if the platform is a graveyard, which Federation helps with. that’s my point. Not that most people sit down and literally go “man I just want Federated services.”
Oh true. I think it would be difficult for a chat platform like Revolt to federate correctly with other existing services though. Channel permissions, role permissions, bot functionality - I think it would be difficult to honor this stuff with federation. For example, Matrix and Revolt don't have the same system of role permissions.
element isn't bad tbh. I've been using it lately, and it's actually caught up a lot.
What’s element?
basically foss e2e encrypted discord. https://element.io/
Dope this looks great
It's also federated, so anyone can run a server and any of your users can join any other servers. I've been slowly migrating my discord server over to it
So it’s instance driven as well then. I’m not quite techie Enough to run my own instance but hopefully I can find a good one for us to jump on. Thanks for the tip. I tried revolt but it just wasn’t quite it and every server I’ve gone to has been a graveyard.
The problem with revolt is that they didn't do federation, so every server is going to be limited to people who want accounts on that one, and discord has shown us that people want one interface to see all of their servers. So I'm not surprised. I like their UI, but they need to federate with other servers.
As for hosting I understand what you're saying. There's a few options to host your own with a couple of clicks online, but paid of course. To test it out I'd say set up on a smaller instance and see how you like it. It's rougher than discord for sure, but I've tried all of the others and it's where I'm landing.
This is all really good information, thank you!
Why do they need my location data?
If I'm not mistaken, that might be a server or app level item. You're using the element app with matrix org. Try something like the fluffychat app, or maybe another server if you prefer. If you go to matrix.org you can see all of the servers
Thanks!
