Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

A BYU graduate student has had his Form I-20 revoked without notice and told to go back to Japan before the end of April. He is among dozens of international students in Utah who were told their visas had been revoked last week.

He and his attorney, Adam Crayk, told KSL NewsRadio the federal government revoked his visa without prior notice due to what the government said was “otherwise failing to maintain status.”

Crayk said he only has two speeding tickets on his record, as well as a catch and release violation from a fishing trip in 2019, which was dismissed with prejudice in court.

Crayk told Dave & Dujanovic that Onda has little to no social media footprint. He said he does not have a history of speaking out about politics or participating in protests; rather, he just posts pictures of his family.

Crayk said he’s learned through court filings that the government is using AI technology to locate any criminal activity amongst student visa holders and revoke their visas. He said this is being done without human cross-references.

PHDs are abandoning the USA already for europe and canada, and other western countries. its already beginning. it was already teetering on the brink before his anti-science directives.

I'm looking for a PhD program to enroll in, and I was already iffy about even considering US universities. Now? No way.

i wonder if you can apply overseas, a european phd program?

Most of them you can, as far as I know. You will have to time your application with the immigration procedure (which can take months depending on the country), but it's definitely doable.

seems tricky, but if you're on your way to get a phd anyways, it shouldnt be a problem.

I already studied abroad for my masters, so I'm familiar with the process for grad school abroad. It's a bit of a pain, but doable.

if you got the requirements to get into a program, my cc and state kinda screwed me with thier ivy league level courses at the community level, so many people were in dead ends in cc for many years because of that. they literally said we have to maintain these courses at a certain level, (somehow i dont believe thier bullshit, why because the state school i transferred to had much easier classes that had no issues with transferring or grad studies requirements. it was kinda sad actually hearing people getting academically dismissed and trying to get back on campus, causing an incident.

the usa has a problem with its pipeline from BS-to-Phd EVEN BEFORE trump2.0, basically its pretty hard to set foot without significant exp upon graduation anyways, theres that problem, something university are reluctant to talk about, if they had labs in the schools, why arnt they telling students? then when i contact the PIs looking for lab work, i found a pattern, they dont want students to suddenly flood them with requests for volunteering, so they try get you out of thier office as soon as possible by telling you some inaccurate advice.

real shit. after I finished my MSc here, two years before COVID, I told myself I would only pursue a PhD if it was outside the US as part of a plan to lifeboat out of this shit show. most colleagues acted like I was a crank.

I wish I had been wrong. the academy in the US is cooked and there seems to be zero recognition that the current situation is structural. they are all just orienting to dutifully ride it out and recover once the orange man is gone.

there is no limit to how much or how many our so-called public intellectuals will sacrifice and slaughter to hang onto some meaningless, symbolic scraps of their own little fiefs. or how many brazen opportunists will rise to the moment, protect bullies and gut infrastructure to secure a sinecure.

the collapse of the US academy is only going to accelerate with each passing day.
