marx was not a statist, leftism is about the destruction of heirachy, just because some idiots think they will be the king to control their pawns doesnt mean that is what the political theory suggests.
did you like... read it? by statist I assume you mean in favor of a state?
marx understood the nessesity of the state, but the end goal is a stateless society
