If you want video hosting there are literally way better options and that predate tiktok

like what ? There are no alternatives to TT as of now, people want the same experience when they switch from a big platform to a smaller one, the smaller one has to offer something that the bigger one doesn't, it could be better Ui ( but similar ), better loading times, No ads as you mentioned.. just better

So it justifies why they made the switch, remember to them, their sacrifice is content to be viewed and therefore value... ( if we can even call it that ๐Ÿ™„ )

I don't think an ethical alternative could exist, simply because TT, Facebook, Instagram, rely on dark patterns to make their users hooked, mindlessly scrolling down, swiping up, and reducing their attention span in the process

If the user don't get that same stimulation as before they're not gonna stick around using the better alternative

I think you're right. I hate that you are, but reality points to that being the reason these platforms continue to grow and thrive.

I read once that the only two industries that call people users are the tech industry and the drug industry

ever since then, I have been saying the word : stimulate, because that's what they do, they give users that dopamine rush, with push notifications, reminders, SMS and Email notifications, suggestions based on behavioral tracking and shady algorithms that triggers emotions mainly - but not limited to -anger ( because that drives engagement )... Etc

This doesn't mean it's not worth taking a shot, when these platforms screw up ( and they will ), when the migration starts you want your alternative to be able to handle the weight
