World News
A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

Netanyahu is obviously not building gas chambers to gas the jews, but he is overseeing exceptional brutality being done to a group of people, most of whom are innocent. Nazism isn't only about jews, it's about all minorities or other ethnicities than the own one more broadly. Apart from the jews, the Nazis also killed a lot of polish people and anyone they deemed 'deviant'. Just because 'Nazis killed jews' is the only piece of information that stuck to the cultural zeitgeist doesn't mean it's the only thing you should focus on when determining if someone is a Nazi or not.
Nazis were also famously fascist, had no elections, had a strong security system to squash internal dissent and brooked no protest, none of which apply to Israel.
I get the appeal of labelling things you oppose as nazis but you can't just pick and choose what aspects fit and then apply the term nazi, it just makes us look dumb.
When someone gets banned from a site and complains that site is run by nazis, if we're using your standard of picking and choosing then that person is as correct as you are as the site is allowing no dissent and removing those who do. But in reality (I pray) we both look at that person and think less of their complaint because of the silliness of their comparison.
Same thing here. Use words that are accurate, genocidal would be a fair one if you believe it but nazi, it just makes you look fucking silly.
I wish I could upvote this harder. The Jewish people were subjected to horrific evils, but that wasn't just going to stop with them.
Society did a great job of teaching about the atrocities except to really hammer home that it was the "other" that was the target, not just that single group; they are the first, but wouldn't be the last if the Nazis were allowed to continue.
It didn't just stop with them.
Slavs, gypsies, LGBT people (I guess this one actually happened before Jews), some war prisoners, Communists, blacks, etc were targeted and holocausted too.
That's a good callout on me! I didn't mean to insinuate it was only that group one at a time, so thank you!
And yet when 10% of the population of Israel were out in the streets demanding his removal in 2023 the government did nothing to the protestors. That's decidedly not fascistic. Israel might be horrible but they aren't currently fascistic.
They shot and killed protesters in 2024. In any case, that isn't the deciding factor when considering if something is fascistic or not.
If the state isn't authoritarian they aren't fascist. Israel is a democracy.
You can have elections and still be fascist. Hitler was elected too.
Jesus lord, this is a really really inaccurate take. There was only one election, it was the one in which Hitler took power. There were no more after.
One of the hallmarks of fascism is that it is anti-Democratic.
When Hitler was elected his party was fascist but the state was not.
You can have elections and still be authoritan, if you also have a solid spoonful of political repression. (HINT: shooting protesters and closing news providers is repression)
I mean, it's literally an apartheid state. In what world do you live in?
True but Israel’s elections are free and fair elections. No one is currently claiming otherwise that has evidence to support that claim.
You can hate Israel all you want but they are not an authoritarian state.
They cannot be free and fair. The very fact that it's an apartheid state means segments of the population are not represented fairly.
Technically, palestinians can vote but they must be "citizens of israel" and getting the title is very hard, mainly because Israel makes it difficult. Gaza and most of the west bank cannot vote in national elections.
Any politician that isn't Jewish faces massive discrimination and there are laws to make sure they can't actually lead or gain power.
Take a second to learn what “free and fair elections” means because you are clearly confused as to what it means.
Most nations do not let non-citizens vote so that’s not surprising.
Regardless the only people calling Israel fascist are those people who have zero clue about fascism or the Israeli government.
There is a difference between non-citizens and a population you have kept in prison over decades.
During the apartheid in South Africa, the black population was systematically denied citizenship. Would you consider those fair elections?
But I guess any rhetoric is okay as long as it's in defense of the great genocidal warmongering state of Israel. I'm guessing you have a connection with the nation, but rabidly defending pure evil is always a bad look, even if you were raised to do so.
You seem to be REALLY ignorant about the whole "we don't like them so we don't consider them citizens" strategy that might be one of the oldest authoritarian strategies to leverage xenophobia in the play book...
No, you just seem to have a poor understanding of how governments work. You already are doubling down on your ignorance which is a bad sign.
I don't have any interest trying to correct people who want to cling to ignorance so let's stop here.
They shot and killed protesters in 2024 you wacko, not to mention that is not the deciding factor.
