Because absolutely no americans whatsoever know how to make fentanyl themselves. Trump thinks that by making his citizen pay 25% more for aluminium, wood, etc, magically fentanyl will dissappear from the country
I mean, they can't seem to figure out that tariffs will be hitting their wallets directly. And it'll fuck us economically due to Americans not wanting to buy our goods with the 25% excess.
It doesn’t just hit wallets; it hits supply. Suddenly there aren’t enough aluminum cans for all the goods people want to can, and food spoils as a result. That kind of thing. And as a result, the food that does get canned costs 25% more (not just an increase in the can component).
I agree, Canada does not make up a sizable number of immigrants or fentanyl to the US (I think Trudeau said 1%, I've not verified this), but the tariffs are just a cudgel to beat us with to get concessions from us.
PM Pierre Polievre - PPP - will definitely capitulate to whatever Donald wants. Not having had an actual job other than populism, he's got no concept of saying "whatever buddy" and then ignoring the last 10 minutes of speech from the donald.
Don't forget Smith's precious oil.
Steel too, we produce a lot of specialty products used for automotive and construction, as well as a lot of tin plate used in food packaging and appliances. They produce material stateside of course but they do historically buy an awful lot from us.
When I worked in steel during the last tariffs, that company ended up eating them, with favourable exchange (see weak dollar) and tariffs jacking the spot prices they still managed record profits.
