I think the American strain of this in particular is because the right wing needed something to organize around after the Soviet Union fell, and figured out that it didn't have to be real for them to organize around it.
I mean I was born a year after the SU fell, but like… were Christian’s not like this 35+ years ago? I find that hard to believe. Like wasn’t the satanic panic in the 70’s?
Satanic Panic was 90s.
I mean, it's not that there weren't elements of this stuff before, it just wasn't the massive animating force it is today.
