Even within the "in group", humans still show patterns of greed, dishonesty, etc. Con artists are a great example of this; people who will slip into the group and then work only for themselves.
Con artists see everyone they are lying to as outside their group. They might even see themselves as a group of one.
Even families - watch one family member with wealth die, and watch them all clamor for the remains. Humanity is not selfless. Pretending so is purposely remaining blind and ignorant to humanity's true nature. "In Group", "Out Group"...doesn't matter one bit.
