They're either pixel-shit or wastelands or some shit.

At times, they seem very grey-ish, like the Dune duology by Denis Velleneuve.

The color palette's just not doing it for me.

And at times, the gameplay is the same... Remember when Nintendo made games with more gameplay "gimmicks"? I miss those "gimmicks" because they made things interesting, but at least Echoes of Wisdom (the new Zelda game) will have something like that... Even the Indie games can sometimes over-use the Unity engine or Unreal Engine 5.

It may be because I'm depressed, but aside from OMORI, which is also a bit derivative from other RPG Maker games (I still love it), nothing really... Idk, looks interesting?

I just had a thread about suggesting me games, but I'm running into the same problem as before.

...I... probably should at least try them, at least some, but I feel like I'll run out of games that ARE good and then quickly bump into games that ARE bad. I don't know. Maybe just me. Probably lol

Thoughts? Do you think too many games nowadays look the same or "samey"? Do you think many have this problem?

I feel the same. I only play very few games anymore for this reason. Most of the games I play are very niche because they at least try to be unique. Like Fates of Ort or Dust Riser for example. I also tend to play a lot of open source re-implementations like OpenRCT2, OpenMW or Augustus (Caesar III).

Game stores are flooded with crap that tries to appeal to the widest possible audience, which makes it really difficult to find actually good games. Even most Indies only produce slop. Nintendo used to make really interesting games back in the day. Still have my GameBoy and 3DS with some of my favorite games, so at least I can still enjoy those.

I think the biggest problem is that they try to reiterate each other or are "inspired" by each other.

Hence, Rogue-likes and rogue-lites.

It's capitalism. Nobody wants to take risks anymore because game development is a huge industry now with many investors who demand their developers play it safe and make sure it has mass appeal. Then even the indies (those who view game dev primarily as a business) see that what the big guys are doing "works" so now they strive to do the same because otherwise there would be no way for them to stay competitive. Only game devs who view making games as a fun thing to do and don't even really think about the industry or the current market can make good games. Which are a small minority at this point, because capitalism favors the former.

The growth was probably going to be a net negative for the rest of us in the end, including the people that work on the development teams.
