ROM scene. Where? (lemmings.world)
submitted 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) by Benjamin@lemmings.world to c/android@lemmy.world

It's been a while since I was into unlocking and ROMing my devices, but I've got the itch again.

XDA used to be a good place, but... I hope I'm out of there loop or something, because it's almost a ghost town compared to years ago.

I've got us carrier unlocked devices; OnePlus N10 and N20, Moto G7Power.

GSI are dominant now, device specific Roms are rare these days.

“Generic system images”

Since device manufacturers don’t support their hardware, Google has tried adding another layer of abstraction between hardware and the Android UI

Really?

I haven't seen any third party GSIs. What have you seen (that I clearly lack the google-fu to find, lol)?

Oh cool, thanks!

I have a couple devices on that list, may have to experiment a bit.

[–] Benjamin@lemmings.world 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I see my N10 there 👍

Finally something to play with! Tyvm

[–] thequantumcog@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Even if your device is not listed, it is still supported. Every phone launched with Android 8 or greater support project treble. Thus, it also supports gsi.

[–] Benjamin@lemmings.world 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I've not been able to get the built in gsi loader to ever work, not even with an app.

From what I understand, 1+ is not doing something the expected way... Idk.

I still need to find TWRP and to backup stock partitions first.

  1. DSU works properly for Android 12 or greater.
  2. If fastboot works you don't need twrp.
[–] Benjamin@lemmings.world 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

DSU, do you have a OnePlus N10 or N20? It does not work. If it works on your OnePlus, please provide the extra/special steps you took other than tapping the app and selecting a gsi, then rebooting. Nothing happens on boot. No gsi. Just boots normally.

[–] thequantumcog@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago (2 children)

Both N10 and N20 do not support DSU because they launched with the Android version less than Android 12. But you can still install GSI with the traditional method. Check you VNDk version with this app and I can tell you which gsi's are supported by your device.

  • Android 14 QPR2 will cause problems
  • Try this one.
  • Make a Backup of your data
  • Unlock Bootloader (if you haven't already)
  • Reboot to bootloader
  • fastboot flash system gsi.img
[–] Benjamin@lemmings.world 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Is it really that simple? I haven't ROMd in 5yrs/since A/B partitioning.

GApps incl?

[–] thequantumcog@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

Yes, you will have bugs. But those are fixable with toggles in the TrebleApp. And Gapps are included.

[–] Benjamin@lemmings.world 1 points 7 months ago

I'll get back to you. Busy atm, but definitely want to sort this out.

[–] EddoWagt@feddit.nl 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Last time I checked GSI's kinda sucked and had worse performance than native ROMs, is that still true? (Keep in mind this was 3 or 4 years ago)

[–] thequantumcog@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago (1 children)

No, it's not at least in my case. Actually GSI Lineage is a little bit faster due to less bloat than stock. But performance could be different for different devices.

Note: I experienced some bugs but all of them were easy to fix.

[–] EddoWagt@feddit.nl 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Awesome, what phone are you using?

[–] thequantumcog@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)
[–] EddoWagt@feddit.nl 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Never heard of that one, but great that you can get GSI's working on it smoothly

[–] thequantumcog@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago

Yeah, it's an Asian brand. That's why you have never heard of it.
