OTA TV stations used to have an end to their broadcast day, and they'd play the national anthem before going to color bars until morning.
Or just static
I kind of miss actual TV static, it was a reflection of the cosmic microwave background radiation and truly random if anything in this universe can be. Nowadays when people want to imitate static for a visual style, it's always like a crisp QR pattern of semi repeating pixels.
and I'm like 'It doesn't look like that at all!'
I even lived through the end of that period and sometimes wonder if I hallucinated it lol.
Like, a channel can even go off the air? Why?
Now we'd find that kind of thing creepy and call it "analog horror" maybe. XD
