I think you might be confusing them with the other major Korean car maker Hyundai but it could have been both!

Kia and Hyundai use a lot of the same parts, so if one was doing it, it's likely both were.

Found this Reuters article, yeah it's both...

It's because Hyundai is the largest shareholder of Kia and Hyundai supplies parts for Kia and Renault in Korea
