Well, the show seems to be indicating that Lakan is Maomao's biological father (and the dying courtesan in the Verdigris House annex is her biological mother). Whether she's just angry at him for what happened to her mother or there's something more going on hasn't surfaced yet. Lakan may be pushing Maomao at Jinshi (I suspect he knows Jinshi's real identity), or just trying to be part of his daughter's life as much as he can, given that they're not on speaking terms.
(Or—who knows?—I might be completely wrong.)
I got that much. The thing that bugs me is his motive. He's supposedly a strategist so his moves definitely can't be random. I don't think he's actually after Jinshi and is only targetting Maomao. When Jinshi carried Maomao out after she was injured in that ceremony thing, Lakan had a shocked expression and that's just giving me mixed signals with how he usually acts. It makes me think he wasn't directly involved with Suirei's plot but then it's even weirder that he didn't notice anything.
TLDR I feel like all the clues to figure out his goal are right there but I'm just too blind to figure it out.
