Firstly, for all the purists, enjoy the game the way it was made to be played. Luckily, we’re not competing online, and us, non-purists, who don’t have skill/time/patience, can tailor the fun levels for ourselves.

So, while I enjoy Silksong a lot, the annoyance level by ~second half of act 2 got me and I was seriously thinking of dropping it altogether (run backs, some sadistic locations, general “fuck the player” vibe).

I’ve installed a couple of mods and I’m having much more fun now. Definitely makes the game easier and “not pure,” as the gatekeepers would say, but who cares. It saves time, nerves, and keeps the challenge at the level I actually want right now.

To install the mods, this guide works great: https://blog.joshnichols.com/post/how-to-install-silksong-mods-on-the-steam-deck/ (thanks to /u/mrblank_0).

Instead of installing “simple cheats,” I picked my own set:

  • Stakes of Marika Rebirth Anywhere. This changes everything and finally I can explore happily without stressing all the time (how far was the bench? God…).
  • Always Magnets. Works for rose beads and shards. Just a time saver, especially in vertical areas.
  • Always compass. No explanation needed.
  • Bonfire Teleport. I just can’t be arsed anymore to run back to transport nodes. FromSoft games started allowing this and nobody’s pride got hurt.
  • No Double Damage. Still preserves double damage from proper combos, but clamps it for single attacks and, what especially ground my gears, collision with “big enemies.”

So yeah, if you find yourself more stressed than having fun, I highly suggest looking into this. It completely turned the emotions around for me, and I’m finally having a blast.

Due to the high volume of very similar posts asking what r/SteamDeck users were playing, this weekly megathread has been created to have a singular place to hold this very frequent discussion and limit duplicate posts. Feel free to share what you have been playing on your Steam Deck or even post pictures in this thread and show us if you wish!

My work PC died and while waiting for repair I ended up working on my Steam Deck for the last three weeks. I’m not a total Linux newbie, but I usually spend 99% of my time in Windows, so I thought it might be interesting to share some notes.

Setup:

  • Two screens stacked (one ultrawide, one standard) via a Lenovo docking station
  • One day of travel to client meetings — obviously couldn’t bring the Deck to such professional setting, so I borrowed an old laptop instead

What worked:

  • KDE is surprisingly close to Windows. Similar shortcuts, and window/tab arrangement felt natural.
  • Taskbar could be placed where I’m used to (left side vertical).
  • Overall experience was about 90%+ positive — not too much to complain about.

What didn’t work:

  • Every restart boots to gaming mode, so I had to manually switch to desktop each time.
  • Immutable system files made some things tricky (like installing Python libraries).
  • My mic wasn’t always picked up — had to re-plug ports occasionally.
  • Input would sometimes stop registering for several seconds if the Deck was busy with other tasks.
  • MS Teams was the biggest gap. I used Ferdium for chat, but calls don’t forward there. No native client meant lots of compromises.
  • Tried LibreOffice and WPS Office — both had issues (crashes / weird bold text bug). Ended up using Google Docs most of the time. If I did this long-term, I’d probably spin up a Windows VM for heavier MS Office work.
  • I didn’t actually game on it during this period. Docked switching between work and game modes felt too disruptive, so I just played on my 3DS instead.

Bottom line:

The Deck actually works quite well as a flexible PC, and it surprised me how much I could get done on it. At the same time, it goes a bit against the unique position of the Deck as a pure gaming handheld, where one button press gets you straight into a game. Still, it’s great to know it can handle work in a pinch.

Has anyone else here tried using their Deck as a daily driver for work? How did you deal with Teams/Office or other workflow gaps?

I’m a student and I’m sometimes on campus for 7+ hours. Don’t currently own a deck but thought of gaming on GOW or Spider-Man for 30 mins then switching over to desktop mode and getting some studying done between classes really intrigues me. I’m curious what other aspects of your life besides gaming has owning a deck impacted

Clockwise movements to scroll down, anti-clockwise to scroll up.

All this time I've been using simple vertical movements on trackpads, just like using scroll wheels on mice, and found the scrolling behavior to be rather odd many times. Thankfully, I needed to tweak my controller layout settings for a specific game, whereby I took a glance at the trackpad settings. And that's when I finally saw the clockwise labels for vertical scrolling. Now that I actually know how to use it the PROPER way, it feels SO MUCH smoother and actually more satisfying than using a scroll wheel on a mouse.

I posted this in “looking for games” but the auto-mod ate it. So let’s try again!

I preordered the OG Steam Deck thinking I would be diving into a bunch of AAA titles on the go. What I didn't expect was to have an entire new perspective on gaming because of this little beautiful piece of hardware. Over the last 3 years I have been searching for games I never would have played on my PC. The first two games I played after getting my SD were Katana Zero and Cult of the Lamb but then I got Kingdom Two Crowns and fell in love with pixel art all over again. Currently playing Sanabi excellent. I'd love to amass a list of other pixel art games I can add to the queue. So hit me with the recommendations!
