So, about a year ago I bought the Switch (late to the party, but I mainly game on my PC anyway). It was nice to finally play some of the Nintendo exclusives since I hadn't owned a Nintendo system since the Game Cube. A few months in, and I realize I made the wrong call because the games I wanted to play when travelling were in my Steam library.

Finally I have in and grabbed the Steam Deck and it has been wonderful! Not just for travelling, but also when the wife and I are just chilling on the couch watching Neebs Gaming. I can still play the games I want to play without hiding out in my office.

I still go in there to play Destiny 2 or others that are better with K&M, but still. I've found myself finally getting to my back catalogue of forgotten gems.

Kernel level anticheat is the main bane of linux gaming.

It is also abused by tencent

Microsoft plans to take such things out of the kernel :)

Hi all, I am trying to choose my next game for the SD and I figured I'd check in with the hive mind here on reddit. I am going through a quite stressful and not-so-easy moment in my life, and I'd like to get something to unwind and distract me at the end of the day. The ideal requirements would be something like

  • Good story/cast of characters which can keep me playing and feel immersed
  • Environment/plot gives good vibes and doesn't end up being too bleak or depressing (looking at you, Elden Ring)
  • Not too difficult or complex. Ideally, an ARPG which is not too challenging. Many classic JRPGS might fall out of the scope here if I have to put too much mental effort into them.
  • Runs well on SD (hence why I am asking this here)

So far, contenders for this place are

  • Harvestella (ticks all the boxes, but I have read mixed reviews and I wanted to double check with people)
  • Atelier series
  • Sea of Stars (the main cast of characters, I have heard, is pretty good)
  • Trials/Visions of Mana

The last time I was in this situation, Tales of Arise did a decent job at helping me through it (despite some heavy themes going on in the plot, the dynamics between characters were entertaining enough to keep me going) so other Tales Of might work as well.

Thanks yall!

I took a first pass at trying to come up with an easy to use chart for understanding the state of emulation on the Deck. Would very much appreciate a community look at it. My emulation needs END at PS2 - so anything higher than that was me making an attempt. :)

Appreciate the feedback UPDATED 1:25pm MST

I’ve owned a Steam controller since the beginning, and i still use it constantly. It’s a wonderful piece of design, as is the Steam Deck itself. Almost everything that Valve does is great.

Why, then, does the official dock suck so much? I own prolly two dozen devices that output HDMI without any issue. It’s literally plug-and-play. Not the case for the Steam dock.

You can use the dock fine for a week straight, and then the next boot up there’s no audio and seemingly nothing you can do to fix it - the predicament I’m in now.

I know I’m in the minority because i strictly use my deck docked, but it’s a common enough use case that the experience should just bare-minimum work. It’s insane that it doesn’t. If i plug and unplug my PS5 HDMI cable into my TV, it will work just fine. For the love of god, make the dock work the same way.
