👋 Hi everyone,

I'm the solo creator of an app called Monarch. It's a tool that helps you handle various tasks on your Mac (see below), without getting in your way or overwhelming you with complexity. It launched in February 2024 and has received tons of updates and new features suggested by users! Many users I talk with weekly to get ideas and discuss feature development in real time, so I hope to end up talking with you!

First things first:

There's no account required, no subscription (one-time payment), it works completely offline, and it collects absolutely no data and no telemetry, and it's currently 33% off for lifetime free updates.

What is Monarch?

Monarch functions like Spotlight Search, but it goes beyond just searching apps and files. Throughout my day there are so many little roadblocks or moments of friction that make doing one task or another just a little bit harder than it needs to be. Not much harder, just about 2% or 4%. Once per day would be no big deal, but multiple times per day throughout the week and you find yourself losing a lot of time, focus, or momentum.

Monarch is a collection of super useful tools and functions combined into a single app. It's designed to eliminate those tiny moments of friction throughout your day and help speed you along and prevent context switching wherever possible.

Best of all, Monarch is 100% user-supported. There are no VCs involved in Monarch and there never will be. If you are familiar with the Stop Killing Games movement, I am a big believer in developer responsibility and so the app is set up so that a rug pull is not possible. This means that Monarch will always work, now and forever!

Here are many of the key features:

⌨️ App launcher for opening, switching, and quitting apps with ease

Use Monarch to open, switch to and quit apps. A nice UX touch here is that when you are about to quit apps with the "quit" command, Monarch shows you how much memory quitting the app will free up.

🧮 Powerful calculator with natural language and unit conversion

Never open a browser tab for a quick calculation again. Here are some calculations you can try in Monarch yourself:

"$10/month x 7 years"

"$50.36 / (2lbs / 27.5g per mug)"

"time in tokyo"

"time in new york"

"3 weeks from now + 4 days"

And that's just the beginning! If you decide that you want to shorten your typing, you can create variables such as "wfn = weeks from now" and "d = days" and then you can change the last example to: "3 wfn + 4 d". Very handy, especially when offline!

📋 Clipboard history

No more losing data you copied, or having to send yourself links, or having a scratch note to keep track of things you might need later. Monarch keeps track of what you copy and allows you to retrieve it later. You can filter by content type, application, pin items, rename items and even search the text in screenshots. You can turn clipboard history on or off at any time and it automatically filters out content from password managers like Keychain and 1Password.

🔗 Superlinks - Connect Monarch to anything

Superlinks allow you to create a link between Monarch and any other app or website. You can specify dynamic fields, control how links open in browsers, and even reorder the parameters as you see fit. Superlinks make it so that you can be anywhere on your computer and immediately access your favorite apps and tools! You can check out Monarch's user manual to see what I mean!

😊 Emoji & Symbol picker

Easy access to emojis by opening Monarch and typing ":" You can rapidly select emojis by holding the ⌘ key or simply copy them to the clipboard to use later. Emojis and symbol names can be next to impossible to remember, so Monarch allows you to rename anything with ⌘+R, making emojis easier to use than ever.

📝 Note capture

The fastest way to take notes on Mac. You can even be in fullscreen watching Netflix, or in a zoom screenshare listening to a lecture and Monarch will appear on top of anything, allowing you to quickly take notes and get back to what you were doing without changing workspaces. Notes can also be written in markdown for easy formatting and the notes are 100% local and stay on your computer.

🎧 Audio controls

Connect to your favorite audio devices without touching your mouse (or do use the mouse). Save input and output combinations as presets to access them even faster. Save individual devices with ⌘+S to have them appear in the main search results so you can connect even faster.

🔍 Blazingly fast file search

Start typing the name of a file and see much more relevant results than with default spotlight. This is because configuration and library files are excluded from search in Monarch by default. Find files quickly, then drag and drop them to send them to someone or upload them.

📁 Navigate file system via Monarch

Press the ">" key on any folder to enter into it and search the contents of that directory. This is useful for when you want to find configuration and library files, as well as hidden files. Press the right arrow key on any file or folder to activate Instant Send, and perform a wide range of relevant actions on that file or folder.

👤 Quickly search your contacts from Monarch

Search for and open your contacts from Monarch. Pretty self-explanatory.

🔖 Browser Bookmarks

Search and find your browser bookmarks directly in Monarch. You can set Monarch to track the bookmarks of all of your browsers. Hold the ⌘ key while searching for bookmarks to easily launch them in any browser at any time, much more easily than ever before.

🕧 Apple Reminders

Integration with Apple Reminders so that you create, edit, and delete them using Monarch. You can also see your most urgent reminder at a glance whenever you open Monarch. You can mark them complete or incomplete directly in Monarch's UI.

Custom Themes

Change Monarch's look to suit your personality using the built in theme editor.

That's a good start! There's much more to the app, but surely this is enough to get most started with. New features and improvements are being added constantly, and some people are even seeing their suggestions being heard and then implemented in a matter of days.

To start using Monarch, you can download the app from the Monarch website or you can install it using homebrew by running brew install --cask monarch if you prefer it that way.

You can purchase the app to support the mission via the website. I genuinely love getting feedback from users, so please share your perspective!

Frequently asked questions:

What's the difference between Luna/Freya licenses?

Luna license is a lifetime license that will have access to all versions of Monarch from 1.0 to 2.0, 3.0 and beyond, for 0 upgrade costs for the rest of ever. Freya licenses will be similar to CleanShot X licenses in that you can optionally upgrade for a small fee. Luna license is lifetime because it's my way of saying thank you for supporting so early!

EDIT: Thanks for the award whoever gave that!

A few years ago, I released Watch to 5K, a standalone Apple Watch app designed to help people get into running by training towards a 5KM goal with just their Apple Watch. Since its initial release, I’ve worked on numerous updates, including the addition of an iPhone companion app for tracking overall progress and viewing completed runs, and a complete re-write in SwiftUI.

This year, my focus has been on expanding the app to meet the needs of those ready to push beyond the 5K mark. Earlier this week, I released version 6, which includes a new 5 to 10K Expansion plan.

Here’s what’s in the 10K plan:

  • 8-Week Plan: This new plan is designed to help users transition from running 30 minutes to a full 10K over eight weeks.
  • 3 Runs Per Week: The plan features a mix of base runs, long runs, and recovery runs spread over three days each week to build endurance and speed.
  • Distance Goals: Introduces distance-based goals alongside the usual time-based ones, adding variety to the training.
  • New Achievements: Unlock new achievements as users hit distance milestones.
  • Voice Coach: Provides progress updates at every kilometre during distance runs. It’s a feature that has really helped me stay on track during my own runs!
  • New 10K Icon: A small but fun update—there’s a new iPhone app icon to celebrate the progress to 10K!

A Quick Recap for Newcomers

For those who are not familiar with Watch to 5K, here’s a quick overview of what the app offers:

Key Features:

  • Made for Apple Watch: Runs independently without the need for an iPhone. Watch face complications are included, allowing users to monitor their progress and quickly launch the app.
  • iPhone Companion App: Track progress, view a breakdown of previous runs, including health data and run route. Achievements are awarded as users progress through the plan, celebrating milestones such as running continuously for 5 minutes or a certain distance.
  • Integrates with Apple Health: Sessions are stored in Apple Health and count towards activity goals. Tracks route, distance, calories, average speed, and heart rate.
  • Listen to Music While You Run: Works alongside preferred music or podcast apps, automatically ‘dipping’ the volume for instructions and updates. Signals the halfway point, so users know when to head home. Features an easy-to-follow countdown timer with sounds and haptics.

Pricing

The app is just £3.79 ($4.49), with no ongoing subscriptions (as they just don’t feel right for a beginner running plan). The 5 to 10K expansion can be unlocked for an additional £3.79.

Getting Featured by Apple!

A couple of weeks ago, I received an email from Apple stating that Watch to 5K might be featured in the App Store. This Thursday, the app began being highlighted on the main App Store tab in the UK & Ireland stores! Seeing an app I created featured alongside big names is an incredible feeling. It’s amazing that, as individuals, we can craft an app from start to finish and have the opportunity to reach millions of people.

Links

You can find more info about the app at WatchTo5K.com. The app is available on the App Store.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, whether you’re new to the app or have been using it for a while. Happy running! 🏃‍♀️

Ben

Hi folks — I am the design and photo half of the team of 2 ~~dudes~~ fresh dads that make Halide, a camera for iPhone.

tldr: we made a way to take photos with zero AI stuff and without almost any iPhone processing.

A lot of people started using our apps in the last years to get less processing on their shots. Processing is the thing that makes iPhone photos great or terrible depending on who you ask — it can do a lot of magical things in the blink of a second, like merging a dozen photos together to give you detail in shadows, highlights and dogs and cats and people. AI comes in and cuts out parts of the shot so they can be edited a bit differently. It lets you do stuff like portrait mode, or night mode!

It also sometimes is what makes you puzzled when you take a photo and it comes out looking WAY different than what you thought it would.

The reason is simple: because lots of ‘computational magic’ is done in processing to get nice shots out of very, very tiny lenses and sensors, the results always have some creative decisions baked in. And you might agree or... well, disagree with those.

I always felt like it would be ideal if you could just choose — maybe even per shot! — if you wanted this or not.

That’s why we made this update. It’s been a few years in the works (4, if we’re counting) - but new apps, new iPhones, and two babies later and here it is.

Halide 2.15 lets you pick between Apple’s default camera processing, reduced processing, or Process Zero. The last is new, and shiny, and basically does a zero-AI, minimal process on raw sensor data from one shot to get a nice, film-like shot.

Note that it’s not *better*(*): it’s really just, well, different. You can choose if you want it or not. Expect contrasty shots; grain; some imperfections that processing removes. At night, it might get very noisy! But I found it really fun to ‘relearn’ my love for photography without the help of the computational stuff.

(* it’s better if you liked the results more. that’s the fun part!!)

Now, the other part to this is that I’m... not the biggest fan of the AI wave that is hitting all sorts of creative arts. I think AI is great for doing the things that I hate doing. I want it to do my bookkeeping and organize my stuff. But increasingly, I see photos being made meaningless through generative AI and more products that replace the wonders of a creative process. I think, as companies making creative tools, we should take more of a stand to make tools for creation and putting control in the artists’ hands rather than try to replace them. And this is a small step towards that.

Anyway, our update is out now with a 1 week free trial — and I wanted to answer some questions on iPhone cameras / photography, the update, and more as well as hand out some promo codes. I usually drop into the thread a few times throughout the day and just give ‘em out, but this time I also have some for our video app Kino and our other lil cam Spectre!

Edit: I wanted to add to this — I know we’ve added tons of features that mostly targeted both Pro and the latest and greatest phones, but we went through a lot of work to ensure that this is on just about any iPhone we can support — going back to iPhone 8 and iPhone X. It’ll even make your old shots you took with Halide better if you shot in RAW with our new process!

Drop a comment and I’ll DM you a code as long as we got some!

And if you already enjoy the app and take photos with it, stay tuned for a fun Process Zero contest we’re doing next week.

edit: gonna step out for a quick lunch but back after to send out some more codes!

edit 2: whoa folks, thanks for the amazing response. I’ll send out what I can and then switch over to sending out some codes for our other apps :)

I stumbled upon this old clip of Steve Ballmer, the ex-CEO of Microsoft, commented on the 1st iPhone right after its 2007 launch.

Interviewer: What was your first reaction when you saw the iPhone?

Steve: LOL ...most expensive phone in the world and doesn't appeal to business customers because it doesn't have a keyboard...

Frankly, his perspective made a lot of sense. Let’s rewind to 2007: fully touchscreen phones made up less than 1% of mobile phone sales. Everyone was content with keyboard phones—they were faster and more accurate for texting and dialing. A phone with just a touchscreen and no physical keyboard? It seemed crazy and undesirable to almost everyone.

For Apple to build an entirely touch-based phone was seen nearly as a reckless gamble. Imagine trying to pitch this idea back then to investors, shareholders, or company executives, who would rightfully ask, “What’s the unique selling point (USP) here?” Back then, even Steve Jobs would've had hard time convincing people, but luckily, he didn't need to persuade many people to move forward with his vision. As Steve Ballmer’s reaction highlights, the idea was far from universally understood--at least until the iPhone’s sales numbers started to roll in.

Perhaps USP isn't just about having a killer idea that wows everyone immediately. Sometimes, it's about a novel concept that starts with a small group of believers and is brought to life through relentless and meticulous execution. Steve Ballmer couldn’t pull it off—but fortunately the other Steve did.
