You are very welcome:-).

Depends on what you mean by "works" - it won't change their minds, though I suppose you mean it can help reveal their style to other onlookers.

It is like arguing with children, except that's fun! :-D

Sadly not everyone chooses to partake in this "knowledge thing" that others value so high. Anyway yes, they are fantastic!:-D

This sounds like me 10 years ago. Also still 2 years ago.:-) Now, I take a different view. Others have already said it, but I wanted to reiterate the obvious: the purpose of trolling is not to engage in a good-faith argument, but just to mess with you. It's basically as effective as arguing at a brick wall, except arguing with a wall doesn't hit back (or dox you and come at you with a literal irl gun or bomb). For a much more in-depth explanation, this is an excellent video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmVkJvieaOA. TLDR: you are governed by one code of ethics, while they are not.

Sadly I know very little there. I know I HATE my current Samsung (mostly due to the company practices like you mentioned), and I also felt incredibly betrayed by my OnePlus 7T before that (the device itself was amazing, until an update broke it and now it literally hurts my hand, like I wonder if it's giving me cancer by radiating something through the shielding that it burned through), and before that I absolutely adored my Nexus 5 (but Pixels are a whole other thing entirely - far too much camera and too little actual phone for my tastes). The entire smartphone world is incredibly predatory. I mostly figure that the next one I get will be a cheap phone, maybe even a dumb flip... but on the other hand I do live in an area where Google (or whatever) Maps could really help out so... I don't know what I'll do when my current one craps out:-(. Probably I will research a Fairphone, but if you live in an area where that would be difficult to repair, then yeah that may not be an option for you:-(. At least you live within the EU though where such is being forced to change, so you have that going for you.:-)

I bought a Samsung as well. We should both learn from our mistakes, and never do that again - this is simply the cost of doing business with them. Maybe Fairphone would be good?

That's what I was suggesting yeah:-). That's awesome that you are following through, and hey if it is working then that's the proof!:-P

I would presume that it is attracting existing Lemmies to those new communities (well, new-to-them, or at least far healthier than the used to be), though my point about technical issues applies more to people who remained on Reddit. Especially those who already tried Lemmy but didn't like it and thus left, which could be for both reasons - lack of content and technical capabilities.

Yet without an audience, it's just people posting into the void.

I think we need to accept that we aren't going to become Reddit pt. 2 anytime soon. Smaller steps might be a good way to go - e.g. if a small sub dedicated to a single game is too small, then post in a medium level one like its genre.

But also, the main reason I stopped recommending the Fediverse to people - well aside from the fact that nobody was listening:-P - wasn't just lack of content, and instead mainly bc there are so very many technical glitches. I eventually left Kbin entirely bc it never seemed to progress anywhere, but everywhere I've gone on Lemmy, while it has been better, is still far from perfect. For instance, I have to re-login every single time I come here - even on the same day, and sometimes also just randomly while browsing, both mobile browser and also desktop.

We who are here are okay that it is alpha version software, but the kind of people on Reddit who have remained are not. Consent matters: we haven't enticed them here, and we need to be okay with that, or else do a LOT better job trying - which will take time and effort, which is underway - and either way it would help to accept the situation as it is not just how we might dream that it could be otherwise.

As I listen to people like the comedian George Carlin, who was talking about it before it happened and yet managed to lay it all out for us in advance, I realize that things were always going to head in this direction, and it was never going to be any different.

Therefore, for the sake of our own sanity, I think we need to let that go: it's never going to happen. The USA might not even survive the decade (imagine Trump winning, but even if he doesn't, is there any doubt that a GQP member will take the one after that? historically speaking, Dems never win successive elections), and if it does then the Dems will just cite how Congress blocked them at every turn, blaming the other side for why even with a majority they won't pass any laws related to e.g. school shootings.

Whatever happened in the past, it's over.
