Othello and Desdemona in Venice by Théodore Chassériau (1819-1856)

The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice, often shortened to Othello,[a] is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare around 1603. Set in Venice and Cyprus, the play depicts the Moorish military commander Othello as he is manipulated by his ensign, Iago, into suspecting his wife Desdemona of infidelity. Othello is widely considered one of Shakespeare's greatest works and is usually classified among his major tragedies alongside Macbeth, King Lear, and Hamlet. Unpublished in the author's life, the play survives in one quarto edition from 1622 and in the First Folio.

Othello has been one of Shakespeare's most popular plays, both among playgoers and literary critics, since its first performance, spawning numerous stage, screen, and operatic adaptations. Among actors, the roles of Othello, Iago, Desdemona, and Emilia (Iago's wife) are regarded as highly demanding and desirable. Critical attention has focused on the nature of the play's tragedy, its unusual mechanics, its treatment of race, and on the motivations of Iago and his relationship to Othello. Originally performed by white actors in dark makeup, the role of Othello began to be played by black actors in the 19th century.

Shakespeare's major source for the play was a novella by Cinthio, the plot of which Shakespeare borrowed and reworked substantially. Though not among Shakespeare's longest plays, it contains two of his four longest roles in Othello and Iago.

Only got one single trick or treater. I guess I get to eat a bunch of candy now, but it's sad. When I was a kid and trick or treating, I remember the streets like swarming with kids. And I see more kids playing or riding bikes around my neighborhood on any normal day than I saw on Halloween.

What happened? Are kids not allowed to have fun anymore?

[–] buckykat@hexbear.net 19 points 1 week ago

The KKKri$$tians happened. They invented "trunk or treat" so they could keep their kids fully surveilled at all times.

Inflation, cold temperatures, and U.S. citizens in general (especially suburbanites) are only continuing to become increasingly asocial or antisocial; nobody is really doing anything about the loneliness epidemic.

I kind of feel like one of the most radicalizing bits in Capital 1 has for me been the understanding that we give the capitalists constant no interest loan by selling them our labor without getting paid until later.

The whole thing about company stores, fake bread and looking at it all now when people live on credit cards month to month, paying huge student loans and mortages. And it's just like LET'S GO REVOLUTION!

I also feel like if more libs would understand this, it might open their eyes a bit. It's a system built to scam you, from top to bottom.

At a church group this morning, someone asked if food assistance programs were doing the right thing or not because they stave off the consequences.

I thought they meant like “if we feed hungry people, then the gov’t won’t be forced to provide/reinstate food stamps.”

Ghoulish enough, but it was worse.

They clarified that people would not understand the consequence of voting for Trump unless they go hungry.

Out of about 10 people, 2 people seemed to admit thinking this way. There was pushback.

On the good side, the church is legitimately service oriented, and donated 200 meals today.

Listened to some of the Norm Finkelstein/Candace Owens interview at the gym. Telling someone with an antisemitic, conspiracy-brained audience about a "Jewish supremacist billionaire class" surely is a choice. what-the-hell

I get what he means and he isn't wrong, you just really shouldn't phrase it like that when your current audience is a bunch of chuds who believe in a Jewish cabal extracting adrenochrome from babies or some dumb shit.

I have to stop myself from becoming the millennial version of a boomer. "You ain't got no rejection sensitive dysphoria you just have anxiety and it's causing you to spiral."

Recently had a family get-together and was mildly horrified to discover that nearly all my older relatives are having their minds melted by constant exposure to slop through their various social media algorithms.

I watched some of them sit for hours, delighted at the constant stream of frankly revolting and upsetting images and videos.

I thought it was bad before, when one of these get together meant the TVs were always blaring either a 24 hour news network or else reruns of old sitcoms, but this time the TVs weren’t even switched on. The situation seems dire.

i’m such a Halloween nerd that i’ve tended to get genuinely depressing post holiday blues this time of year lol, but i’m trying to shift my mindset and enjoy that November has a charm all its own, easing from the “spooky season” mindset to the “contemplative, bittersweet, beautiful-but-melancholy quiet” season mindset. they dovetail well too since a lot of horror media has an undercurrent of sadness.

(the early sunsets are pure evil tho) (also apologies for spreading temperate climate hegemony)

A Turkish Iranian Houthi Baʿathist Hamas commander and Hezbollah terrorist was teaching a class on Mohammed Amin al-Husseini, known anti-Zionist.

‘Before the class begins, you must get on your knees and worship al-Husseini and accept that he was the most highly evolved being that the world has ever known, even greater than Theodor Herzl!’

At this moment, a brave, unconscripted, Hebrew-fluent Israel Defense Forces champion of purely Jewish ancestry who served 613 tours of duty and understood the necessity of hafrada and fully supported all military decisions made by the State of Israel stood up and held up an Israeli flag.

‘What does this flag represent?’

The arrogant commander smirked quite Arabically and smugly replied with a blood libel, ‘It represents Jewish supremacy and apartheid, you stupid colonizer!’

‘Wrong. This flag stands for Jewish self-determination. If it stood for Jewish supremacy and apartheid, as you say, is real… then all of the Arabs in Israel should be gone now.’

The commander was visibly shaken, and dropped his chalk and copy of The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine. He stormed out of the room crying those antisemitic crocodile tears. The same tears that antisemites cry for the ‘Palestinians’ (who could live in any Arab country if they wanted to) when they selfishly hoard land from its indigenous Jewish inhabitants. There is no doubt that at this point our commander, Matt Lieb, wished that he had returned to his homeland in Libya and become more than a pan-Arab extremist leader who wanted to kill Jews. He wished so much that he had a human shield to hide his embarrassment, but he himself had thrown his last one off of a rooftop!

The students applauded and all joined AIPAC that day and accepted Theodor Herzl as their lord and savior. A hoopoe named ‘Hasbara’ flew into the room and perched atop the Israeli flag and shed a tear on the chalk. Hatikvah was sung several times, and G-d himself showed up and expelled Ireland from the United Nations.

The commander lost his position and was captured the next day. He served 67 life sentences plus 5,200 years without parole until he was killed by an exploding pager.

Why do people take Obama's calls man. He won at the helm of a movement he immediately abandoned, proceeded to accomplish none of what he set out to do, and then he inspired the current american fascist movement while he was at it (Altough to be fair to him a large part of that is sinply because he was black).

That's not even getting into his warmongering or the entire generation of totally useless Democrats that came out of his administration. But I guess some people would call that a positive.
