Sounds like a visit from some hackers to make everyone legal is in order.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Man anonymous and whoever are just script kiddies apparently. A decade into this fuckery and - what? They downloaded ICE agent names to pass amongst themselves and giggle about?

SAD!

Yeah apps are known to be 100% reliable and without bugs.

Tap for spoiler/sarcasm

I bet it just checks the colour of people's skins.

Either that or it has database of who is US citizen or who is here on VISA or something, and if not it deports but it has many points of failure like your ID photo or whatever photo can be bald, but you in the meantime grew hair a little and here it can possibly think you are different person. Especially considering app being "definitive determination" according to screenshot and it overrides birth certificate, like I could see possibility someone getting falsely accused (hopefully not) because they changed their appearance a bit idk.

[–] jonne@infosec.pub 9 points 1 week ago

There's already stories of US citizens being detained despite having valid ID on them. There's financial incentives for them to bring in as many people as possible and they don't care if they get it wrong.

They don't deserve the benefit of the doubt. Facial recognition has already resulted in false arrests, damage to people's homes, vehicles, livelyhood etc by normal police. ICE has even less supervision and is known to willingly hire people with violent crime records.

I'll say it again: If they remotely deserved the benefit of the doubt, we wouldn't be looking at the reality we currently inhabit.

I want everyone to be speaking like this, so I will lead by example.

If they fucking try it, I will kill them. Then and there.

I'm interested in the Trolley Problem of a hypothetical murder of an ICE agent weighed against the hypothetical murder of a random member of the 1%.

This'll be used as a scapegoat when the trials begin.

Amazing. An app decides if a human being goes to the camps. What a time to be alive.

The app is just that Family Guy colour chart.

If the Israelis have rolled it out in Palestine then it’s coming to a theater near you! See: The Palestinian Laboratory. The Palestinian Laboratory. .

Wait, like match = definitive OK? Or no match = definitive OK? Or no match = definitive not OK? I ask because the details are quite bedeviled.

The first is relatively benign, since it would be a “greedy” OK-list that errs on the side of leaving people alone and otherwise, in a no-match case, requires using traditional methods for identity verification. That kind of app would be the equivalent of Global Entry or TSA Pre-check, an efficiency measure to wave familiar faces through.

The second is worse because it acts as an overconfident not-OK-list that usually errs on the side of leaving people alone but doesn’t account for false positives.

The third is what the headline implies. It’s an OK-list that aggressively errs on the side of “not OK.” The only reason to make an app like that is computer says no.

Regardless, fuck ICE. Fuck Trump.

[–] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago (2 children)

If they scan your face and it says you're illegally in the country then you're getting arrested, no matter what evidence you have to the contrary.

False positives are arrested and held in custody until the legal system can get to them.

I think the app tells them either way.

God fucking damn it you beat me to it by mere moments

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 10 points 1 week ago (3 children)

They can't get biometric data from a face though.

Unless they have 3D scanning cameras baked in, there is no way for the camera to know the real depth of the face features.

This sounds like they're just scanning faces against a set of identified easy targets. If they get a match of an easy target they kidnap that person.

They can’t get biometric data from a face though.

Are you sure this is up to date information?

Edit: The reason I say this is because of this post: https://sh.itjust.works/post/48773975/21833637

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Yes. Biometric data is a unique pattern for certain biological features. Fingerprints are an easy one, the retina is another. These are relatively simple 3D projections onto a 2D surface. The distances between pattern landmarks are recorded as the biometric data.

This is facial recognition at most. Facial recognition is flawed, as it isn't a 3D projection onto a 2D surface, it is a 3D projection estimated from a 2D image.

Without the actual distance measurements and ratios, there is no "biometric signature." It could be done, but like I said, you'd need 3D cameras, and phones are not capable of processing that.

I hear you. But this is the government, he's probably using a government device. Not a samsung or apple off the shelf.

Corporate data superseding government data. Can't image how this could possible end badly. /s

sorry but did anybody expect ICE "agents" to have functioning brains?

[–] minorkeys@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Rules and procedure is great but what people do is all that really matters. Deferring to the list provided and 'just doing my job' is not a justifiable reason to commit crimes against humanity.
