Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.

Yeah I mean it's just a themed Kubuntu, right?

    • Ubuntu is pretty stable, but the latest is pretty up-to-date atm. It's also well supported and well understood by the wider linux community
    • KDE is a solid choice as it will be familiar to Windows users (afterall, Windows 11's GUI was based on Plasma)
    • The novelty of using a Hannah Montana themed linux distro is fun

    It's a fine beginner distro

KDE is a solid choice as it will be familiar to Windows users (afterall, Windows 11's GUI was based on Plasma)

Would you say it's the best of both worlds?

    It's KDE 4.2 though.

Someone tried it this year: https://www.xda-developers.com/i-tried-hannah-montana-linux-in-2025/

TL;DR complete failure. It hasn't been updated in 10 years.

Like a lot of Linux distros, this should have just been a window manager theme and maybe a helper app

Absolutely no sense bringing in stuff like init system and depmod and C compiler version when what you care about is UI theming

    [–] ikidd@lemmy.world 40 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Sometimes, just maybe, people do things to see if they can.

    [–] nymnympseudonym@piefed.social 15 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

oh and props for that... for doing and making new things in general

Just that distro-where-a-theme-would-do is something I see a lot of and people might wind up tackling a larger harder problem than they need to and not spending as much time & effort on the stuff they intended to.

And, a lot lot lot more people can easily download & appreciate a theme than move distros (though some perverse individuals make a habit of the latter)

One could have guessed from the image in the OP. KDE 4.2 is not exactly a recent piece of software anymore.

Damn, Someone should really revive that it's iconic at this point.

If using era-appropriate hardware, I wonder if you could use archived Kubuntu repos to upgrade one at a time until it's a modern Linux kernel.

Thanks for the link, I was gonna try it lol

People should consider Justin Bieber Linux, at least it isn't that outdated.

Came here to say that. If you actually plan to daily a meme distro Nyarch is probably your best bet imo!

    Lol never seen this before.

    [–] daggermoon@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

It hasn't been updated in years.

Yes but you have to play the theme song while installing.

    [–] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 31 points 2 days ago (2 children)

No. Let me know if there's anything else.

    [–] comador@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (2 children)

    How about Crunchbang or Linspire?

    [–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

crunchbangplusplus and bunsenlabs exist as successors-in-spirit to crunchbang!

    [–] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

    Very infrequently and no, respectively.

i'm giving mint a try any day now

It's canonical (to me alone) that the HML is the basis for LCARS in the Star Trek universe.

    [–] 4grams@awful.systems 4 points 2 days ago

It is now for me too :).

    [–] Luci@lemmy.ca 19 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Yes, it’s the best right next to PuppyLinux and LinuxFromScratch

    [–] Endymion_Mallorn@kbin.melroy.org 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

    What's wrong with Puppy Linux?

    [–] Luci@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 days ago

Nothing! Great for live media and daily running. Recommend.

    [–] somerandomperson@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

    People doing LFS have ascended

    [–] swab148@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I did it once. Never again.

    [–] bizzle@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

It's probably pretty out of date maybe you should pick something better maintained as a beginner like LFS

    [–] krunklom@lemmy.zip 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If you're not using HML you don't even deserve to breathe.

    [–] aeternum@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Nah. JBL is where it’s at

    [–] hanke@feddit.nu 2 points 1 day ago

    You mean Beabian?

    [–] Endymion_Mallorn@kbin.melroy.org 8 points 2 days ago (3 children)

I always wanted to know if Miley ever used this.

The only footage of Miley checking if anyone talk about Hannah Montana Linux /j

    [–] Boxwine@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think Hannah used it, but I don't know if Miley did

    [–] klu9@piefed.social 2 points 2 days ago

At least, never at the same time.

    [–] GreenShimada@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

If you try and log in with the user name "Miley" it should give you secret root access.

    [–] sepi@piefed.social 4 points 2 days ago

Low key this might be one of the more serious distros. Mad respect from a long beard.

    [–] sheepishly@fedia.io 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)
    [–] Boxwine@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

The ball and pinball decided it, HML is for me

    [–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

    I prefer MCL

    [–] cypherpunks@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

imo this (.world link) is a better choice
