[–] tasankovasara@sopuli.xyz 29 points 6 days ago

Squint is a smile in catspeak.

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 22 points 6 days ago

Love and affection.

Or food both is same for them.

Perhaps dead so he can eat your face off.......

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

He definitely would. He pokes at my wife’s face while she’s asleep. I bet if she didn’t react he would start munching.

[–] Bluewing@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

We had one that would hop on the bed in the middle of the night and do that. First couple of pokes were gentle. If you didn't wake up, he would add some claws to it. If you would pet him, he would purr...

Hey, what's up? It's me, ur cat :3

[–] Atropos@lemmy.world 120 points 1 week ago (2 children)

As others have said, definitely affection. Your cat loves you and is hanging out with you!

Easiest way to show it back, is to blink slowly back at your cat. Shows trust back to them!

[–] dependencyinjection@discuss.tchncs.de 37 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I always slow blink at neighbourhood cats.

I mean if they're slow blinking while staring it means they like you. But some cats just like staring at things for no particular reason.

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago

I hope so, cause he does this stuff a lot. He likes to sit in the coffee table while we’re watching tv and just stare at us.

[–] drhodl@lemmy.world 106 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

When my cat does this, he's trying to get my attention. If I stand up, he will lead me where he wants me to be. Usually, he takes me to his food bowl, or to the special spot we have for brushes and pats. Sometimes though, he wants me to look outside, because his nemesis, the white cat from up the road, is visible, and sometimes he wants me to open the door for his pal, the black cat from across the road. There can be quite some depth to cat communication, but as with humans, it starts with paying attention. Your cat is a cutie.

[–] tomenzgg@midwest.social 10 points 6 days ago

That's what our older girl does; she's so polite about it, she won't even make eye contact sometimes: just sit and patiently wait until we glance in her direction and then cry and try to lead us.

Our younger boy cries the moment he sees us and then just gets more insistent until he's given attention.

Your cat loves you and is trying to understand you. Trying to figure you out.

[–] relativestranger@feddit.nl 34 points 1 week ago

that look of judgement that every cat feeder knows comes later.

[–] frustrated_phagocytosis@fedia.io 46 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Entertainment. He's waiting for you to do something stupid for his amusement.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago

This big oaf is so terrible at catching mice!

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 44 points 1 week ago

That's affection.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 33 points 1 week ago

I call mine The Fabulous Staredycat Sisters. If they're not sleeping, eating, or drinking, they're usually staring at me, each other, or both 😄

[–] prettybunnys@sh.itjust.works 25 points 1 week ago (1 children)

He’s waiting for you to do something.

Do it.

[–] ruuster13@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 week ago

This is absolutely the correct answer. The stare sans slow blinks is them wanting you you to do something. The language barrier cuts off the meaning of the request and creates a recurring headache if you can't figure it out.

The predator watches its prey carefully, waiting for the ideal moment to strike.

Follow them and find out.

You're not gonna discover what your particular cat wants from you in this particular moment by consulting the internet, you're gonna find out by listening and communicating back with them.

Don’t listen to anyone. Your cat is plotting your demise.

Help you accidentally fall down the stairs?
Chew the wires to get you electrocuted?
Suffocate you while sleeping?
Whoopsie! Didn’t see that wood chipper. Sorry about.

[–] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 15 points 1 week ago

That looks like a big smile.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I honestly believe they are communicating with us telepathically. They look at us intently, think "I'm hungry, feed me." And you look up from your phone and look at them staring at you, and you say "Aw, sweetie, you're so pretty! Why are you staring at me? Oh, look at the time! Are you hungry? Let's get you something to eat!" And then you do it.

In her mind, she telepathically ordered you to feed her, and you did. Obviously, telepathic communication works, especially after it's worked in multiple instances.

Which also means that if she orders you to do something, and you don't, it means you are just being an obstinate little bitch.

[–] ConstantPain@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

Probably cats get very confused with our actions because of our more advanced thought process and mental model, we do things without stimulation. So they try to find behavior patterns to it.

We do the same with other people, but animals are more sensible to it.

[–] Venus_Ziegenfalle@feddit.org 14 points 1 week ago

What he wants is to stare at you

[–] wander1236@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 week ago
[–] ptolemai@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

Cat sizing you up: human is bigger than a mouse, but much slower. I can take him down, but who's gonna clean the litterbox...

[–] 0x0@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 week ago

What does he want from me?

Your soul.

[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

It's probably lacking stimulation. It needs you to entertain it, preferably via bloodsport.

[–] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 week ago

Mine will scream at me. I don’t know what he wants but I can’t do anything this weekend because MEROOOOOOW!
