JD Vance has said he is ready to take on the presidency “If God forbid, a terrible tragedy happens” to Donald Trump.

In a wide-ranging interview with USA TODAY, the vice president said he was “confident” President Trump would see out the rest of his term, but added he has had a lot of “on-the-job training”.

He also insisted to White House Correspondent Francesca Chambers Trump was in “incredibly good health”, despite recent questions about the president’s physical wellbeing.

tragedy? Did someone else die too?

[–] Alpha71@lemmy.world 0 points 6 days ago

This would be a good thing. He doesn't have the cult of personality that Trump has. This would hopefully allow some sanity to come back into US politics.

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 196 points 1 week ago (2 children)

It is very normal to talk about this.

[–] frezik@lemmy.blahaj.zone 75 points 1 week ago (2 children)

He was specifically asked about the President's health in an interview, and gave a bog standard answer any Veep would say.

People are reading too much into this. Trump's health certainly isn't good, but he's not likely to pop off this week.

It'll be nice if I'm wrong.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 27 points 1 week ago

A competent politician would redirect into confirming the health and longevity of the president, and not talk about the scenario of his death at all.

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 11 points 1 week ago

"That's what the constitution would ask of me, so yes, obviously. I don't understand why you'd even ask me this."

[–] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 64 points 1 week ago (4 children)

I gotta wonder why he said that, especially in light of all the rumours surrounding orangeman's health.

Could be Vance is giving America a head's up of things to come.

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 31 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

What are you even saying, there is no reason, this is NORMAL. I too keep declaring regularly to my family that I am ready to step up and inherit my dad's house ~~and live there instead of my shitty flat~~ should ThE uNsPeAkAbLe happen. This is to reassure my dear family of my loyalty to my dear old dad and my confidence in his health, obviously, may he live to 150. Normal People Things.

🫠I don't do this, not least because I am in no shape to take care of a whole-ass house lol

[–] bus_factor@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago

Probably just answered the question the reporter asked?

They only need Trump to stay alive long enough to consolidate power. Then it’s phase 2. And it doesn’t really matter what anyone thinks as far as “respect” or “like” them. The long term plan is privatize everything completely moving the seat of power away from government altogether. We’re well underway.

[–] frezik@lemmy.blahaj.zone 48 points 1 week ago (6 children)

They may think that, but it doesn't work that way. They need a singular leader to unite the base. Once that's gone, they'll fracture fast.

What comes next is probably closer to European liberalism. Better social safety net, but capitalism mostly goes on. The US doesn't have a groundswell of support to be any more anti-capitalist than that.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 25 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Maybe. Fractured, sure, but I don't think the Republicans collectively will be any less harmful without Trump. Congress and the governors will continue with the Project 2025 agenda under President Vance.

[–] frezik@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 1 week ago (6 children)

Some of y'all never been in a cult, and it shows.

No. What happens is they all tear each others throats out trying to be on top. Nobody wins. The GOP dies with Trump.

Agreed. This isnt a collective conservative front like the Tea Party. This is worship of a singular figure head. Once he's dead it'll crumble

[–] 4am@lemmy.zip 14 points 1 week ago

That really depends on how deep the rest of them have gotten their claws into the controls

Maybe Trump won the election fair and square but do you think they won’t try to rig for JD Vance? With all the other shit they’re doing grabbing the headlines, what kind of “boring” administrative shit have they fucked with that the press is too busy to even cover?

Guys I’m starting to think something tragic has or is about to happen…

[–] miked@sh.itjust.works 17 points 1 week ago (3 children)

What part would be tragic?

[–] FinalRemix@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Going from raging pantshitter pedophile to a dedicated P2025 patsy.

That Vance would become president.

Trump is dead, or going to be very soon, isn't he?

What beer should I buy to celebrate?

[–] masterofn001@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Enjoy the very momentary joy of trumps death when it happens.

If it happens in this term, you'll find out exactly what Vance is.

Before i got laid off leadership said everything is fine. I didn't believe it then and this is way more obvious.

[–] DaddleDew@lemmy.world 40 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

To be fair he did not say that unprompted. A journalist specifically asked him if he felt ready to take the president's place should something happen. And it is downright misleading from the article writer's part to not mention that detail.

Pretty sure Vance isn't planning to kill him until after January 20, 2027.

[–] solsangraal@lemmy.zip 38 points 1 week ago (3 children)

trump is a bully who, for some fucking reason beyond the horizon of my comprehension, people are afraid of. vance is a fucking potatofaced punching bag who literally no one cares about, let alone is scared of.

maybe wishful thinking, but my single shred of hope lies in the implosion/evaporation of the GOP when trump finally fucking croaks and people are shitting on his grave

[–] AreaKode@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

But Trump's dementia causes him to go on stupid side quests. Vance is a yes man. He'll finish Project 2025.

[–] solsangraal@lemmy.zip 14 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (7 children)

vance doesn't have the capability to be the cult leader trump is. he's a fucking joke (not to say trump isn't). he'll be torn to shreds, not just by normal people, but by troompa loompas as well. the people who fellate cardboard cutouts of trump are so fucking stupid that they have zero problem with trump having an immigrant wife, but big problem with vance having an immigrant wife.

there might be some other reality in the multiverse where i actually pity vance and his inevitably terrible future-- but it isn't this one

He can't wait to fuck those lovely couches in the oval office. Right now Donnie won't let him.

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 25 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (3 children)

“He’s got incredible energy, and while most of the people who work around the President of the United States are younger than he is, I think we find that he actually is the last person who goes to sleep, he’s the last person making phone calls at night, and he’s the first person who wakes up and the first person making phone calls in the morning.

Because everyone else is a hardcore alcoholic...

If Trump has the most energy out of all his staff. That's not a good thing for trump, it's a bad thing for his staff.

Same bullshit as when Biden was in office, like, I'm pretty sure they were saying the exact same thing when he was in office.

The man saying this has NEVER worked a labor job, saying it about a man who has never SEEN laborers. Trust none of what he says, for he has never walked a minute in your shoes.

The only tragedies would be that Trump would have escaped prison and Vance would be President.

[–] Arancello@aussie.zone 14 points 1 week ago

isnt Vance the guy who was asking for help/guidance on poisons?

[–] solrize@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 week ago

Impeachment doesn't sound like a terrible tragedy to me, but it's unlikely either way.

If God forbid, a terrible tragedy happens

Yeah, right. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if JD Vance has is eye on the oval office. Remember, he was an adamant anti-Trumper at one point. Sure, he ended up caving and kissing the ring, but maybe that was just a ruse. Either way, I wouldn't be surprised if Trump didn't make it all the way to the end of his term and Vance ends up being sworn in as president. That might be what some people have wanted all along.

[–] affenlehrer@feddit.org 25 points 1 week ago

He already killed the Pope, he could kill again...

[–] _chris@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

He's all in with Peter Thiel. It is definitely the plan.

[–] kikutwo@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

I can only get so erect. Realizing that this guy would be the Chevy Chase of Presidents and regime change in visual only, I'll take it.
