We had the Six Day War in 1967, we had the Nineteen Day War (Yom Kippur) in 1973, and now we've had the Twelve Day War. I wonder how many more very short wars will plague the region until Palestine is freed?

However, moving on from Western Asia from a little while, we have some interesting news from Chile - the former labor minister and communist, Jeannette Jara, has won the primary election for the left-wing bloc in a landslide (~60% of the vote), as the current President, Gabriel Boric, is term-limited. Her achievements include a minimum wage increase and a reduction of the work week to 40 hours.

In November, Jara will face down the contenders from other parties, including José Antonio Kast, who is analogous to Brazil's Bolsonaro. Unfortunately, Jara is now the lead figure of a party that has been taking quite a few Ls under Boric's leadership. Ostensibly a Democratic Socialist, he ruled as - you guessed it - a neoliberal, bending the knee to the US and EU. He not only failed to overthrow the Pinochet-era constitution, he actually allowed the right-wing to turn the proposed new constitution into something worse, and had to settle for campaigning against the new one and keeping the old one. And he had very little solidarity with other left-leaning leaders on the continent, like Maduro, Lula, Petro, or Castillo.

With this in mind, I cannot help but look at Argentina's very recent history and feel a little dread - but if anybody can save Chile at this point, it can only be a communist.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

The House is holding open a procedural vote (that they won), but aren't moving forward with the vote on the Senate BBB yet. Only explanation is they don't have enough votes (yet).

Dayen:

Here's the latest on the Big Beautiful Bill. The process is stalled in the House. There are opposers, yes. But nobody has actually come out to vote no yet. There's ample reason for skepticism that anyone will to tank the bill. (link below)

Brazil: Lula denounces collapse of multilateralism at Brics summit - Prensa Latina

Article

Rio de Janeiro, Jul 6 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva here today strongly denounced the serious crisis of multilateralism and defended the urgent need to reform the structures of international governance.

During the session on Peace and Security, Global Governance Reform, at the XVII Brics Summit, the host leader said that the creation of the United Nations marked “the defeat of Nazi-fascism and the birth of collective hope”, but today “we are witnessing an unprecedented collapse of multilateralism”.

He pointed out that this forum in Rio is taking place in the most adverse global scenario since the founding of the UN, which celebrated its 80th anniversary on June 26.

He recalled that many of the countries that are now members of the bloc were founders of the UN and also protagonists of the Bandung Conference, which in 1955 rejected the division of the world into zones of influence and defended a multipolar international order.

He warned that the autonomy of the countries of the Global South is once again under threat.

Among the setbacks denounced were the attacks on international climate and trade regimes, the fragility of the global health system - accentuated by the Covid-19 pandemic - and the “absurd demands on intellectual property” that hinder access to medicines.

He drew attention to the unprecedented number of conflicts since World War II and the recent decision by the North Atlantic Organization (NATO) to increase military spending.

“It is easier to allocate five percent of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) to military spending than the 0.7 percent promised for Official Development Assistance,” he lamented.

He warned that the fear of a nuclear catastrophe has returned to daily life and urged not to be indifferent to the genocide practiced by Israel in the Gaza Strip, the indiscriminate killing of innocent civilians and the use of hunger as a weapon of war.

He considered that the only possible solution to the conflict is “the end of the Israeli occupation and the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state within the 1967 borders”.

Once again, he reaffirmed Brazil's commitment to peace and dialogue and, despite the alarming scenario, acknowledged the historical advances of multilateralism, such as the decolonization process and the prohibition of chemical weapons.

He again referred to international governance that does not reflect the new multipolar reality of the 21st century and that it is up to the Brics to contribute to its updating.

In this regard, he proposed a profound transformation of the UN Security Council, with the inclusion of new permanent members from Asia, Africa and Latin America.

"It is more than a question of justice. It is a question of ensuring the very survival of the UN," he stressed.

Israel reportedly sending food mixed with deadly narcotic to hungry Palestinians

Oxycodone, typically used for chronic pain relief, can be fatal if misused, especially in a community already devastated by war, hunger, and displacement. Gaza officials warned that some pills may have been ground or dissolved directly into the flour, raising fears of a deliberate act to poison the population and trigger mass addiction.

So to my earlier comment about Khamenei being half Azeri, just a few days ago the Azerbaijani government put out a hit piece called "The Root of a Hatred" saying that Khamenei is secretly half Armenian and THAT is why he would DARE to accuse Azerbaijan of letting Israel use its territory to attack Iran like happened. https://oc-media.org/baku-again-hits-back-at-iranian-accusations-israel-used-azerbaijani-territory-to-attack-iran/

Just your casual reminder of fuck the Baku government. Iran also put out a statement this week breaking from other Muslim nations on the Organization for Islamic Collaboration's statement on Armenia and Azerbaijan's ceasefire.

A spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry said Monday that his country did not approve of a statement issued last week by the Organization for Islamic Cooperation that supported Baku’s claims of a “Western Azerbaijan” state in present-day Armenia.

OIC Member states may raise issues in collective documents that do not reflect the position of each member state, Esmail Bagaei, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson said, according to the Mehr news agency.

“We have always advocated for peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Peace and security in the South Caucasus are important to us, we have good relations with these two countries,” the spokesperson said.

“At the same time, we do not approve of the use of concepts and words in that specific statement. We believe that the use of those words is not appropriate at all,” Bagaei, said most likely referring to the “Western Azerbaijan” issue embedded in the statement that was drafted and presented by Baku, during the OIC summit in Istanbul last week.

Iran’s Ambassador to Armenia Mehdi Sobhani on Friday said that Iran categorically rejects any claim to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Armenia, when asked about a statement adopted last week by OIC in Istanbul, which largely parroted Baku’s claims that portions of Armenia are “Western Azerbaijan.”

“Any false and untrue wording that may reflect the territorial claims of one country to another are unacceptable to us,” Sobhani told reporters. “The use of this fabricated and false wording contradicts peaceful coexistence and good neighborliness in the region. Therefore, the use of such wording should be avoided.”

“‘Western Azerbaijan’ is the name of one of the provinces of the Republic of Iran. It cannot be used to name any other geographical area, especially if it implies any form of territorial claims,” Sobhani emphasized.

He said Iran promotes dialogue between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“We call on the [two] parties to sign a peace agreement, the provisions of which have already been agreed upon by the parties,” Sobhani said.

“We recommend that such self-proclaimed historical claims not be used to hinder the establishment of peace in the region,” Sobhani added.

The Iranian diplomat also reiterated his country’s strong opposition to the scheme initiated by Baku to create a so-called land “corridor” through Armenia that would connect Azerbaijan to Nakhichevan.

“The corridor, which is called ‘Zangezur,’ does not stem from the interests of Armenia and Iran. For us this is a ‘red line.’ We have repeatedly stated this and continue to adhere to this position,” Sobhani stressed, adding that Iran does not intend to deviate from its red lines.

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Aykhan Hajizada hit back at Sobhani on Saturday, calling his remarks “false” and an effort to appease Armenia.

“The ambassador’s statements are especially dangerous because they contradict the position of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which was expressed at the meeting of foreign ministers in Istanbul,” Hajizadah claimed.

“The aim of Ambassador Sobhani’s regular and systematic provocative anti-Azerbaijani statements is to undermine relations between Azerbaijan and Iran,” the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman insisted.

Stop Killing Games Initiative Reaches 1,000,000 Signatures

To the delight of gamers and video game preservation enthusiasts worldwide, YouTuber Ross Scott's Stop Killing Games petition has finally reached 1,000,000 signatures after gaining enormous momentum over the past few days and breaking several hundred-thousand milestones at breakneck speed.

For context, the appeal was directed at the European Commission, which is required to address any petition that reaches 1 million signatures. The campaign challenges the practice of video game developers delisting and discontinuing games at will without issuing refunds to the players or at the very least preserving the titles as single-player experiences that wouldn't entail any server hosting-related costs.

With the petition now boasting the coveted million, Ross will have the opportunity to present the initiative to the European Commission and speak at a public hearing in the European Parliament, thus greatly increasing the chances of the movement's core objective – forcing game studios to leave games in a playable state – becoming law in the EU.

"The site says we have cleared 1 million signatures! I hate being like this, but there's a chance a significant number of them aren't real. That means we have to keep signing in overdrive mode to make up for them! I'll have a video on this later today." - Ross

Trump: Doubt we'll make a deal with Japan. Not thinking about extending tariff pause past July 9

July 9 is the big day, where the 90 day pause for the majority of tariffs ends. The China "pause" (current baseline tariff with China is still like 50% lol) lasts for about 30 more days, IIRC? My guess is we're looking at another case of TACO Trump. But it will be crazy if he goes through with it and ends the pause for real.
