This makes me so fucking mad. Fuck PP, he’s a malignant cancer.

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 8 points 5 hours ago

How exactly does this work? Why does the opposition leader get a mansion?

[–] Kyle@lemmy.ca 50 points 9 hours ago (3 children)

Given the partisan vitriol he spread today I hate to defend this but:

There is a 99% chance that after the by-election, he will once again be the leader of the opposition and therefore live in that house again.

So with hubris and laziness he is saving our tax dollars by not having to pay for him to move twice in less than a year. Andrew Scheer gave him permission for this as well.

I didn't watch the video but the headline is clickbait and this is a nothing story.

Yes but it would inconvenience him. And inconveniencing him is worth the money.

If Trump didnt come in with sanctions he would probably be running the country. If we fall into recession as it seems like we are theres a good chance they get blamed as well, the Cons will beat that horse into the mantle.

I, too, find his behaviour and politics so distressing these days that I get where you are coming from.

But I decided I didn't want to feel that way. So, I redirected the time and energy I used to doomscroll into setting a better example and doing something about it.

I joined Fairvote.ca and organized for their recent door hanger campaign to raise awareness on proportional representation. I also attend their monthly Zoom meetings to educate myself on how proportional representation works, how it reduces polarisation, and how it decreases the inflammatory and partisan words in political speech.

I'm shocked at how many people in my life suddenly perked up and said, " Where can I learn more?"

I know you didn't ask, but this polarised hate feels bad, and it doesn't hurt to share a way of coping that has made my life more centred.

I want to live in the timeline where he loses the by-election and has to pay back the months he stayed living there.

I want to live in the timeline where he losses to the NDP

[–] deeferg@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Well it surely wouldn't be the liberals winning an Alberta seat.

[–] Reannlegge@lemmy.ca 1 points 43 minutes ago

Even more amusing would be the greens winning the seat, but I do not think we live in that time line.

Agree 100%

I was having a discussion the other day with someone and it was pointed out that pp grew the number of seats for the CPC and strengthened their position in winning the next election. Thus, unlike Jagmeet Singh of the NDP or Peter Dutton of the centre-right Liberal Party of Australia (who oversaw massive losses in their party) Dutton deserves to win a seat back and remain the leader of the CPC as well as the opposition leader.

Actually, I'm looking for a good, well reasoned counterargument to this (for when I bring it up again tomorrow).

It took the CPC 4 months to turf Erin O’Toole, after he lost - just saying. Tick tock PP, then he’ll get kicked to the curb. Harper will hire him at the IDU though.

[–] braydan@lemmy.world 23 points 9 hours ago

Is there no precedent set for slapping this bitch ass cunt to the curb? Fuck him and his smarmy little Nazi face.

Taxpayer-paid rent for me, not thee

[–] ryan213@lemmy.ca 9 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

Can someone summarize? I don't want to click. Lol

I just happen to have watched this earlier so I'll indulge you this time.

Scheer is letting PP stay at the official opposition leader's well-staffed Stornoway mansion instead of taxpayers funding his family moving out, just to fund them moving in again when he likely wins in a by-election. Even the commenter in the video says that part doesn't matter and it's a non-issue. He also goes on to say it's a shame the PM's residence at 24 Sussex Drive hasn't been renovated in a long time, experts are saying it's "unlivable" but Trudeau and possibly Carney are afraid of political blowback for spending money on fixing it up.

[–] ryan213@lemmy.ca 1 points 9 hours ago

Thanks! Sounds like a clickbait headline then.

[–] saigot@lemmy.ca 7 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

The leader of the opposition is entitled to a house to stay in. PP isn't technically the leader any more because the opposition leader (unlike the PM) must hold a seat. Until he wins the by election he shouldn't really be living there.

[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 hours ago

Fuck that. Sell Stornoway. Use the money to renovate 24 Sussex. Opposition leaders do not deserve a free residence with staff.

[–] YurkshireLad@lemmy.ca 2 points 10 hours ago

Is anyone surprised!
