On Friday is May 9th, which is the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, which Russia, among other places, celebrates as the day when the Soviets defeated the Nazis. Naturally, one of the current hotspots of fascism in the world today, Ukraine, is essentially threatening that they might strike Russia or even Moscow itself during that timeframe. Any such strike would almost certainly be symbolic and not aimed at anything too important, as I doubt even Zelensky and his American handlers would actually want to kill a world leader, not least somebody like Xi Jinping. But I would not be surprised if they tried something nonetheless, if only to disrupt the event in some way and not actually kill anybody.

And, as we're on this topic, @EllenKelly@hexbear.net has reminded me that Tuesday is the anniversary of the Nazis burning the Institut für Sexualwissenschaf in 1933, an early institute advocating for the rights of LGBT people, and which also provided early forms of gender-affirming surgeries, as well as hormone therapies. We are currently seeing a crackdown on LGBT rights throughout swathes of the imperial core (as well as countries in the periphery, to the extent that those rights existed there already), and this Nazi-inspired movement will be similarly defeated in the future.

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.

So how fucked are we compared to any previous popes with this new guy? (we could have had karaoke Tagle if the vatican was based but noooo)

[–] gay_king_prince_charles@hexbear.net 23 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

He's a moderate. Not as good as Francis but better than Benedict

[–] 3rdWorldCommieCat@hexbear.net 16 points 2 hours ago (4 children)

That's to be expected then. Just curious and nervous to see how he'll act regarding China since Francis was open to dialogue.

[–] SevenSkalls@hexbear.net 12 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (2 children)

I thought he was going to be more conservative Benedict level to follow the current trend of the rising right, so I'm actually surprisingly pleased with this pick. But like I said, my expectations were through the floor. His true test will be his views on Gaza.

[–] 3rdWorldCommieCat@hexbear.net 2 points 1 hour ago

Yeah, his first sermon thingy was good (by current day standards anyway) but we'll have to wait and see.

Latest statement by the Yemeni Armed Forces I missed a few days ago. I'd like to publicly apologise to @ThomasMuentzner@hexbear.net, it turns out that Ansarallah (known as the Houthis in western media) did actually attack the USS Harry Truman aircraft carrier just before the ceasefire, resulting in the loss of an F-18 Super Hornet. Not a direct shootdown, but still a loss caused as a result of an attack. I was wrong, they were right. So three losses as a result of Ansarallah/Houthi attacks.

The most interesting thing is the launch of a ballistic missile. From the latest satellite imagery, the Truman was not within typical Anti Ship Ballistic Missile (ASBM) range. So did Iran actually give Yemen their new longer range ASBM, the Qassem Basir? Such could be a distinct possibility, and explain this attack and the American response.

In response to this potential development a new Iranian ASBM with 1200km range being used to target the Truman, the USA have both de-escalated and escalated. They have de-escalated with Yemen directly, with a seperate peace/ceasefire/truce between the USA and Yemen alone, excluding Israel. However, the US has escalated with Iran, by sending four B-52H Stratofortress bombers to Diego Garcia, alongside the already 6 B-2 Spirit stealth bombers. This ups a potential JASSM cruise missile salvo from a maximum 96 missiles, to 176 missiles. (Each B-2 can carry sixteen JASSMs all internally, each B-52 twenty, twelve on external pylons, and eight internally). B-52s also give the US a nuclear standoff strike capability, each B-52 can carry twenty nuclear armed AGM-86 cruise missiles, for a total nuclear standoff volley of 80 AGM-86s. The B-2 cannot yet carry nuclear armed cruise missiles, only nuclear armed gravity bombs for stand in nuclear strikes.

Three AGM-86 nuclear armed cruise missiles on the external pylon of a B-52:

There are rumours that nuclear talks between the United States and Iran will resume on May 11th, but just rumours for now.

Next round of Iran-US nuclear talks likely to be in Oman at weekend - Reuters, May 6 2025

In the background of this, the US is also set to waive Saudi Arabian normalisation with Israel as a condition for a $100 billion arms agreement and civil nuclear program, with a potential US controlled backdoor for uranium enrichment. More on that here

According to NATOpedia, this is what the new pope thinks about stuff:

Pope Leo XIV has opposed the ordination of women to the diaconate. As a bishop Prevost opposed the inclusion of curriculum regarding "teachings on gender in schools" in Peru, stating that the "promotion of gender ideology is confusing, because it seeks to create genders that don't exist". An acquaintance of Pope Leo XIV, Jesus Leon Angeles, noted that he cares for Venezuelan refugees in Peru.

Homosexuality

In 2012, Prevost lamented that popular culture fostered "sympathy for beliefs and practices that are at odds with the Gospel", citing the "homosexual lifestyle" and "alternative families comprised of same-sex partners and their adopted children".

He said some nice things about peace which is always welcome in these times and there is the anecdote of him telling Fujimori to fuck off but he definitely has some vile and bigoted views.

[–] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 42 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

The Pope not speaking in English is a sign that he’s only born in the US but in his heart and mind, he is Peruvian. He even only greeted Peru and in Spanish. Good for him.

[–] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 27 points 3 hours ago

Peruvians are saying that the new Pope is very anti-Sodalitium Christianae Vitae.

What is Sodalitium Christianae Vitae?

Sodalitium Christianae Vitae (SCV), or Sodalitium of Christian Life was a Society of Apostolic Life of Pontifical Right, a society of the Catholic Church. It was founded in Lima, Peru, by Luis Fernando Figari on 8 December 1971. It acquired its canonical form when Pope John Paul II gave his Pontifical approval on 8 July 1997.

The Sodalitium was composed of consecrated laymen and priests, called "Sodalits," who lived in community as brothers and made commitments—not religious vows as such—of celibacy and obedience. There were accusations of brainwashing of young people, and of elitism, conservatism, and authoritarianism; and of sexual abuse by founder Luis Fernando Figari and other Sodalites. There were also allegations of right-wing and falangist activism by Figari in his youth.

On 14 January 2025, Pope Francis signed the decree suppressing the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae; the Sodalitium expressed deep sorrow and shame and requested forgiveness. The decree was formally implemented on 14 April 2025.

[–] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 21 points 3 hours ago

On the accusation of cover-up against Prevost, using as a source “La Verdad nos Hizo Libres” by Pedro Salinas, I open a thread, because those who join these accusations are playing the game of the Sodalitium and its allies.

He is accused of being an accessory after the fact for having prohibited an Augustinian priest from practicing the profession of ecclesiastical lawyer. This man was the defender of two victims of sexual abuse in the diocese of the Pope's diocese. This priest, whose last name is Coronado, had a Vatican prohibition to exercise his profession (the reason is unknown) and a Vatican criminal accusation, but he is also a friend of several old guard sodalits since they shared classrooms at the University of Santo Toribio de Modrovejo.

The media diffusion of the “cover-up” came from different right-wing Catholic portals, all defenders of the Sodalitium. The interest of the Sodalitium in this issue: to accuse its main critics in Peru of being straw men (Prevost recommended the retirement of SCV Bishop Eguren).

As for the facts, the diocese of Chiclayo led by Prevost published a communiqué in 2024 stating that it was Prevost himself who brought the complaint of abuse before the relevant Vatican authorities; the case is still open at the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Thus, to accuse Prevost of being a cover-up is fallacious, since he took the denunciation to the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, he only complied with not allowing an accused person prohibited from practicing his profession to practice it.

me, coming up with examples to teach students the difference between the simple past and present perfect

[–] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 53 points 4 hours ago

The bishop of Chiclayo, Robert Prevost, suggested that former president Alberto Fujimori should ask for forgiveness directly from the families that were harmed by the crimes committed during his government, as a response to the request for forgiveness expressed by the former dictator, which for the religious authority was very generic.

I would watch a gritty action movie about a Swiss Guard special ops elite operator on a mission to kill Vance and avenge Francis

Alright, time to try my hand at screenwriting...

[–] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 18 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

We need a Van Helsing (2004) style movie about this, but instead of vampires or whatever, it's the american ghouls.

god please don't turn all the American liberals catholic just because the new Pope will say something mildly critical of trump. I'll have to hear about "popery" like its 1855 jfc

A wave of progressive Catholics after he excommunicates Vance would be hilarious though

[–] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 27 points 4 hours ago (3 children)

can you imagine a bunch of lib converting to catholicism bc the pope is anti-trump

[–] Gosplan14_the_Third@hexbear.net 28 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Honestly it's about as likely as leftists converting to islam because of Palestine. You might get a few people doing that, but beyond that - I'm guessing there'd be some similar rhetoric, but few actual converts.

[–] Sinisterium@hexbear.net 11 points 3 hours ago

Okay but converting to islam would be actually disruptive, especially since its the genocide target du jour. Unlike LARPING as Irish because your nana send five bucks towards the IRA and american prots are mega-chuds.

The new Pope, Leo XIV (Cardinal Robert Prevost from the United States), is 69 years old. He spent much of his career as a missionary in Peru. He was named a cardinal by Pope Francis in 2023.

The new pope hails from Chicago and has supported Francis's line on social justice issues. Francis invited him to Rome to head the Vatican office responsible for selecting priests who will serve as Catholic bishops around the world.

Trump has already congratulated Prevost. "I am honored to know that he is the first American Pope. What a thrill, and what a great honor for our country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV," Trump wrote.

"Cardinal George of Chicago, of happy memory, was one of my great mentors, and he said: 'Look, until America goes into political decline, there won't be an American pope.'

But that trend was reversed on Thursday, and Prevost's name had popped up repeatedly amid the gossip over leading contenders for the role of pontiff.

Haha hahaha yeah sure buddy

boy oh boy lets check out the new pope's background on wikipedia clueless

cw sa

In 2000, Prevost allowed Father James Ray, an Augustinian priest, to reside at St. John Stone Friary in Chicago. Ray had been suspended from public ministry since 1991 due to credible accusations of sexual abuse of minors. Although the priory was close to a Catholic elementary school, Prevost did not notify the school administration about Ray.

I think it's a good time for anyone keeping up with the Vatican news to read up on Leo XIII's Rerum Novarum. Very interesting to see the way the Church (Vatican I in this case) approaches class struggle, and I can't help but feel like defining a Vatican II successor to Rerum Novarum will probably be a big part of this papacy. And of course, I'm very uneasy about having an American pope being the one to define it.
