I find it bizarre that competition is so bad that there is only one "standard" app for the graphics work Adobe is used for by professionals.
Why is the market letting this happen? Why are professionals allowing themselves to become 100% dependent on 1 proprietary solution? It's like allowing yourself to become a hostage to the companies that supply your tools.
The market didnโt let this happen. Years of bad anti-monopoly practices have seen companies like Adobe buy out their competition.
As a result the amount of money it would take to simultaneously catch up to Adobeโs decades of development and compete with them at scale even with just one of their products is far outside what a lot of people are willing to invest.
The same is true for a lot of โbig techโ right now. Imagine you wanted to start your own music streaming serviceโฆ

I'm not sure I care what price Adobe is at, they're a terrible company. I never trusted them. I probably wouldn't use them for free. Well, maybe the animation and 3d software for free, but I'm happy with the other alternatives.
It also coincides (by a few days?) with GenP moving from reddit to lemmy (dbzer0). They liberate Adobe software.
They've been this way for years. I'm happy he's moving away but to act surprised is really disingenuous.

What alternatives are there? I know there's GIMP, but are there any other options?

Affinity!! Iโm trying to get my work to switch over. We only use InDesign, Illustrator, and acrobat so could be an easy switch, but itโs the acrobat part thatโs the hard one.
