Image of destruction in Mandalay, Myanmar, from Al Jazeera.

As if the ongoing civil war wasn't enough, Myanmar has now been struck by a very powerful earthquake, resulting in 2000 deaths and thousands more injured as of the time of writing. Estimates are that the death toll could reach 10,000. Infrastructure like roads and bridges are damaged, and the hospitals are overwhelmed. The earthquake struck during Eid prayers, resulting in even higher casualties as several mosques collapsed. 20 million people already required humanitarian assistance in Myanmar, and now the situation there will be even worse. International rescue teams have rushed into the country, and aid is being raised, though with USAID experiencing the... changes that it is, the United States will be of even more limited help than usual. So far, China has sent $14 million, while USAID has supplied $2 million. In Thailand, the death toll seems considerably lower, though there has still been significant damage; a skyscraper under construction collapsed in Bangkok.

Myanmar is located very close to the boundary between the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. In particular, the country is divided in two by the north-south oriented Sagaing fault. This fault is typically strike-slip; that is, each side of the fault moves horizontally past each other. The earthquake's depth was 10 kilometers, which is pretty shallow, and its proximity to the surface amplified the felt force of the earthquake. Additionally, the soft soil in this region tends to further amplify seismic waves through a process called liquefaction. Combine all this with the lackluster building codes due to many years of impoverishment and civil wars, and this explains why the death toll, and the expense to the country in general to repair damage, will probably be extremely high.

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

I found a few interesting excerpts from Pepe Escobar's write up on his recent visit to Yemen.

We were relaxing in the dewanya of our hotel in Sana’a, drinking tea and waiting for the daily televised address to the nation by Leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi when suddenly he entered the room, unannounced. We were speechless: that was none other than Yahya Saree, the spokesman of the Yemeni Armed Forces, who Prof. Ma told me is a superstar in China – actually all across the Global Majority.

[...]

In a private conversation with Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, a member of the High Political Council and former head of the Revolutionary Committee, I asked him whether Yemen had diplomatic efforts with Russia and China. The response, in flowery Arabic with several metaphors – lost in translation - and a profusion of smiles, was priceless: yes.

[...]

That neatly tied up with leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi, on X, announcing “there is an upcoming surprise regarding the development of Yemen's military capabilities that may surprise the United States. It could be revealed after its use, as actions will precede words.”

Right after Booker ended his "epic" filibuster, the GOP leadership brought up Trump nominee for NATO ambassador Whitaker. All Democrats and Republicans agree to advance this Trump nomination by unanimous consent. LMAO.

Al-Houthi Claims U.S. Escalation Will Not Affect Yemen’s Military Operations - Telesur English

ArticleThe leader of the Ansar Allah movement, Sayyed Abdul Malik al-Houthi, stated that the aggressive escalation by the United States will not impact Yemen’s military operations, both at sea and against the occupying entity. According to al-Houthi, the Arab nation is prepared to face new challenges and undertake actions during a phase of isolation for the Palestinian people.

In his remarks, al-Houthi emphasized that U.S. objectives in Yemen are difficult to achieve and that Washington seeks to pressure those who support the Palestinian cause, exerting maximum pressure on Iran and threatening military aggression. The recent U.S. offensive targeted civilian sites in Sana’a and other provinces, while the U.S. claims its attacks are aimed at weakening military capabilities.

Al-Houthi reaffirmed the steadfast position of the Yemeni people and announced the continuation of bombings against occupied Palestine. In this context, he highlighted that defensive operations from Yemen have demonstrated the inability of the United States to prevent such actions by Israeli occupation forces.

The situation reflects an increase in regional tensions and Yemen’s commitment to supporting Palestine in the face of what they consider external aggression.

In a new book, top Biden aide describes ‘out of it’ president before Trump debate

“At his first meeting with Biden in Aspen Lodge, the president’s cabin,” Whipple writes, Klain “was startled. He’d never seen him so exhausted and out of it. Biden was unaware of what was happening in his own campaign. Halfway through the session, the president excused himself and went off to sit by the pool.

Corn Pop was a bad dude and he ran a bunch of bad boys, and I did... And back in those days -- you see, things have changed -- one of the things you had to use if you used Pomade in your hair -- you had to wearing a bathing cap. And so he was up on the board, wouldn't listen. And so I said, "Hey, Esther! Off the board or I'll come up and drag you off." Well, he came off, and he said, "I'll meet you outside." My car was mostly... These were all public housing behind you. My car, there was a gate out here. I parked my car outside the gate, and I... He said, "I'll be waiting for you." He was waiting for me with three guys and straight razors. Not a joke! There's a guy named Bill Wright, the only white guy, and he did all the pools. He was the mechanic, and I said, "What am I gonna do?" He said... There used to be a chain that went across the deep end, and he cut off a six-foot length of chain. He fold up, and he said, "You walk out with that chain and you walk to the car and say, 'You may cut me, Man, but I'm gonna wrap this chain around your head,'" and I walked up to my car! And they had (muttering)... In those days, you used top... Remember the straight razor? You'd bang 'em on the curb, get 'em rusty, put 'em in a rain barrel, gettin' 'em rusty. I said, "When I tell you to get off the board, you get off the board, and I'll kick out out again. But I shouldn't have called you Esther Williams. I apologize for that." You said, "You apologize to me?" I said, "I apologize for that. Not for throwing you out, but I apologize for what I said." He said, "Okay, "closed the straight razor, and my heart began to beat again.thought-side-r-2 biden-horror

Lol

Biden had an idea.

"If he looked perplexed when Trump talked, voters would understand that Trump was an idiot. Klain replied: ‘Sir, when you look perplexed, people just think you’re perplexed."

Gaza civil defense confirms rescue workers 'bound, executed, buried in mass grave' | The Cradle

'They were killed by "Israeli" forces while trying to save lives,' the UN humanitarian chief stated

The General Directorate of Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip confirmed on 2 April that "Israeli" forces executed Palestinian first responders and buried them in a mass grave in the Tal al-Sultan neighborhood of Rafah, southern Gaza, on 23 March.

The General Directorate reported that the bodies of eight from the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS), six from the Palestinian Civil Defence (PCD), and one UNRWA worker were found eight days later, buried approximately 200 meters from where their vehicles, an ambulance, and a fire engine had also been destroyed.

Some of the bodies were found with their hands bound and with bullet holes visible in their chests and heads. One of the victims had been decapitated, while others had been disfigured and dismembered.

Very large US military movements have been observed over the last 72 hours, with mainly large redeployments and airlifts from Osan Air Base in South Korea, to Isa Air Base in Bahrain. Over a dozen C-17 transport aircraft have made flights into Bahrain, along with a handful of C-5M transport aircraft, the largest aircraft in the US military. Ramstein in Germany has been used as an intermediary base. Osan is home to the USAF's 51st Fighter Wing, which operates A-10 close air support attack and control aircraft, and Block 40 F-16C/D multirole fighter aircraft. There has also been a redeployment of A-10 aircraft from the National Guard in the USA to the Middle East at this time, with 300 airmen making the trip. Osan is also home to the 35th Air Defense Artillery Brigade of the US Army, which operates the MIM-104 Patriot air defence system, and battery D of the THAAD Anti Ballistic Missile (ABM) system.

So this airlift is suspected to be in support of the A-10 deployment, and transfering air defence systems to the region. The potential use of the air defence systems is obvious (combatting ballistic and cruise missiles launched from Iran), but the A-10s less so. Iranian air defence systems would shoot them down, and they are meant for close air support, not launching standoff weapons. I think the A-10s are being deployed to intimidate the Popular Mobilisation Forces in Iraq, they would be used against them in a potential conflict. A-10s can also be used to counter Iranian fastboats and slow flying drones if necessary.

Israeli PsyOps and propaganda are hyping these movements up as the "largest military action since WW2 is about to take place against Iran ". So I hope this post can provide clarity in the propaganda space.

If anyone wants an idea of how a potential conventional attack on Iran would look like, the twitter thread below by a suspected ex Iranian Air Force pilot provides a good breakdown. It's quite long and I'm not going to break it down myself now, so use translation software like Google translate, deepL, or even AI LLMs like ChatGPT or deepseek to to translate it. Here are the English translations of all 10 tweets by Reza_Mad (@maysam21901), numbered and translated individually while preserving their original structure and split threads:

If war breaks out and we face a conventional attack, aircraft carriers will position themselves at a safe distance. Fighters will launch cruise missiles and standoff bombs from outside our air defense perimeter. B-52s will fire 1,000 km-range cruise missiles. Carriers will deploy Tomahawks. Growlers and F-35s will suppress air defenses. Primary targets: #Rasht

Tweet 2

Mar 30
Primary targets include Chabahar, Bandar Abbas, and Bushehr airbases; naval bases; shipyards; fixed HAWK and S-200 air defense systems; and early-warning radars. They will also attempt to suppress mobile air defenses activated to counter missiles. Attacks will continue for several days.

Tweet 3

Mar 30
In response, we will first minimize the impact of enemy missile strikes using our air defenses. Then, we will mine the Strait of Hormuz extensively, causing merchant ships to hit mines and creating major disruptions. We will also use existing submarines, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles...

Tweet 4

Mar 30
...and long-range anti-ship ballistic missiles like the Abu Mahdi and Qadr-380 to attack the enemy’s naval fleet. Simultaneously, we will strike their bases in Bahrain, Qatar, and Iraq. If we are conventionally attacked, the enemy will gradually move their fleet closer to our borders to extend air defense suppression around nuclear facilities and create a corridor for B-2 bombers. We will try to prevent aircraft carriers from entering the Persian Gulf.

Tweet 5

Mar 30
To prevent war, we must activate diplomacy: engage in direct negotiations with the U.S. on peaceful nuclear energy while threatening that if America attacks us, we will first strike Israeli cities and facilities, then seriously pursue nuclear warhead development.

Tweet 6

Mar 30
In my opinion, a Trump-like figure is both a threat and an opportunity. If we negotiate directly and rationally, perhaps this 50-year hostility could end—provided both sides genuinely want peace. Israel and Iranian hardliners will sabotage efforts to ensure no agreement is reached. This is a major problem.

Tweet 7

Mar 30
After resolving this crisis (whether through war or diplomacy), our defense doctrine must change. Prioritize air, naval, and land forces over missiles and drones. Our navy needs real destroyers and submarines to project defense beyond coasts and into the ocean.

Tweet 8

Mar 30
Our air force needs long-range interceptors like the Su-35 in large numbers to defend beyond borders, fifth-gen fighters to counter neighbors’ future stealth jets, multirole fighters for offensive ops, AWACS, and transport aircraft.

Tweet 9

Mar 30
Our army needs tanks with active protection systems, mobile artillery, and truck-mounted towed guns. Artillery requires computerized targeting and fire control. If our defense doctrine doesn’t change, we will face heavy casualties in war.

Tweet 10

Mar 30
[Continuation of Tweet 9]
If our defense doctrine doesn’t change, we will face heavy casualties in war.

Notes:

  • The original Persian tweets include engagement metrics (e.g., "22 replies · 5 retweets · 1 like · 177 views"), but these are not translated as they are numerical data.
  • Threaded tweets (e.g., Tweets 3–4 and 9–10) are preserved as separate entries to reflect the user’s request for 10 distinct translations.
  • Military terminology (e.g., "HAWK," "Tomahawk," "Su-35") is kept in its original form for clarity.

Let me know if you need further adjustments!

Trump Tells Inner Circle That Musk Will Leave Soon

To be honest I was surprised he lasted this long. But the recent Tesla news, Wisconsin election results and DOGE trying to run the US Government as a private sector agile takeover have been too much now, the Trump-Musk relationship is no longer beneficial for both sides, so it will be put on the backburner.

[–] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 1 points 3 months ago

Say what you will about Trump but he is not a loser and he does not surround himself with losers.

[–] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 1 points 3 months ago

I thought Trump would have expelled Elon Musk on his first day in office.

[–] Lovely_sombrero@hexbear.net 1 points 3 months ago

So funny that Tesla stock went up big on news that Trump won the 2024 election and that Elon will be the head of the DOGE department, but now the stock is also rallying on news that Elon will leave DOGE.
