Due to a request by @miz@hexbear.net, this thread's COTW is Qatar.

The ceasefire deal broke down early last week after Israel unilaterally changed the terms of the agreement and then blamed Hamas for not meeting them. Violence against civilians has rapidly accelerated to pre-ceasefire levels, with many hundreds dead already, aid once again cut off, and Israeli soldiers once again entering and occupying the attritional labyrinth that is Gaza.

I'm not yet in a position to make any solid predictions or analysis, as the geopolitical situation in and around Israel has changed fairly substantially over the last 6 months; in some ways benefiting Israel, and in other ways not. We know for sure how Hamas and Ansarallah are reacting (thankfully, with open hostility to both Israel and the United States), but the state of Hezbollah has been a giant question mark for months now, and precisely what Iran plans to do (beyond the usual level of supplying weaponry and intelligence to all the allies it can) is unknown. Syria will be almost certainly be a big wildcard, and we'll have to see if the compradors in Damascus can weather the storm.

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.

1700 killed on last 72 hours. First day of the attack 400.

I will share my friend's message to me from last night:

"I don’t know, honestly, I feel like I’m going insane. Why all this injustice?! Imagine, they are entertaining themselves with our death in every possible way, trying to unleash their psychological disorders on us. Today, they are shooting at people as they are being displaced! What kind of filth is this?! They are toying with us… killing the children and leaving the mother to watch her son die without being able to do anything! We are in a cage, being hunted, starved, and subjected to experiments of all kinds of psychological and moral afflictions in a live broadcast. People are running without legs, and people are crawling, while parents watch the bodies of their children thrown on the ground, abandoned as they flee from shells. It is an absurd situation—there is no war here, no resistance; the situation can only be described as a trivialization and deliberate act of killing, and a trivialization of death. It’s all absurdity, and our blood is sure to bring a curse upon everyone."

That's Gaza for the last 500 days. And I join her in curses. Yemenis are right, Israel and USA are cursed. It's an old biblical rule "do not steal" and that's why Yemenis say death to them. It's not about wanting those nations literally dead, as those nations mean about Palestinans and Syrians, but it's a call of death if their hegemony. Curse be upon them. In last month tens of thousands of Palestinians and Syrians were slaughtered. Zionists and takfiris demonic ghouls who serve Satan himself and Netanyahu is embodiment of Satan. This is all his wicked sick plan to destroy Levant and erase thousands years old culture and people who have direct ties to that land. Curse be upon everyone. This blood is on everyone's hands.

Sudan’s Military Recaptures Republican Palace Amid Ongoing Conflict - Telesur English

ArticleSudan’s military has achieved a significant milestone by recapturing the Republican Palace in Khartoum, a key stronghold previously held by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Footage aired by Al-Arabiya on Friday revealed soldiers inside the partially ruined palace, celebrating their victory. The military, under the leadership of Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, has been making steady advances in recent months.

A Symbolic Victory Amidst a Prolonged War

The Republican Palace, a historic landmark dating back to British colonial rule, served as a heavily fortified RSF base. Its recapture is a symbolic triumph for the military, signaling its growing strength in the capital. However, the RSF continues to control significant territories, particularly in Sudan’s western Darfur region, underscoring the ongoing challenges in the conflict.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

Since the conflict erupted in 2023, over 28,000 lives have been lost, and millions have been displaced. The humanitarian situation has deteriorated further, with famine affecting large parts of the country. Rights groups and the United Nations have accused both the RSF and allied militias of targeting ethnic African communities, allegations that both sides deny.

The Road Ahead

While the capture of the Republican Palace is a morale boost for the military, it does not signify the end of the war. Fighting persists across Sudan, with the RSF maintaining its presence in key regions. The conflict continues to exact a heavy toll on civilians, highlighting the urgent need for a resolution.

The latest screenshot from the signal group chat seems to have dropped, and as expected, it is not as juicy as Goldberg made it out to be. Still pretty juicy, but not super detailed.

It basically states: we will attack Yemen at this time with these planes, texted out as the first planes took off. It doesn't state what weapons the F-18s will be using or even what locations they will be targeting/who they will be targeting. The only mention of a specific munition is the Tomahawk cruise missile. While it is extremely foolish (from a US perspective) for Hegseth to type this out on a signal group chat 2 hours before the first bombs dropped, it wasn't as if he was giving out the full war plan. It's not as if the Yemenis could have done much with this information either, this message was sent out as the first F-18s took off, so there's little "advanced warning" factor, this message went out as the F-18s flew towards Yemen. Yemen or Iran should be able to detect launch movements themselves here.

Don't get me wrong it's still incredibly foolish to type this out on a signal chat room, would highly likely be considered classified, but it's not like Hegseth was saying "we will target this guy, at this time, at these co ordinates, using 4 AIM-154 JSOW glide bombs."

The interesting thing is that the US military still feels confident enough to fly MQ-9 Reaper drones over Yemen, despite over a dozen confirmed to have been shot down.

Renowned Japanese video game designer Hideki Kamiya has reflected on the recent Assassin's Creed Shadows controversies by asserting that "normal people" don't care about them. His remarks were offered alongside some high praise for the Assassin's Creed Shadows development team.

The latest entry in Ubisoft's long-running series has been mired in controversy since its May 2024 reveal, which confirmed that the game would have a black protagonist, based on a real historical figure known as Yasuke. This fueled a lot of online vitriol, including cases of people vandalizing Yasuke's Wikipedia page and Elon Musk declaring "DEI kills art" while referencing Assassin's Creed Shadows.

Famous Japanese game designer Hideki Kamiya has recently reflected on this state of affairs by stating that "a few super-intense people" made "a big fuss" about Assassin's Creed Shadows. At the same time, the creator of Okami and Bayonetta believes that these detractors are simply a loud minority, having said as much in a March 24 tweet. Elaborating on this notion, Kamiya asserted that most "normal people" adopt an "it's fine" stance when it comes to things like video game-related drama, noting that this phenomenon isn't exclusive to the Assassin's Creed Shadows controversies.

Update on the B-2A Spirit stealth bombers on route to Diego Garcia. Initial flight seemed to be three B-2s (PITCH 11, 12, and 13), but one of them (13) had an emergency and was forced to land in Hawaii, which explains differing reports of two or three bombers. Another B2 (PITCH 14) seems to have been sent to replace it, and the B-2s were observed refueling over Australia this morning, similar to the last B-2 strike on Yemen.

Update: 2-4 more B-2As are on their way to Diego Garcia, as ABBA 11-14 potentially. That would mean a total of 5-7 B-2A Spirit stealth bombers stationed at Diego Garcia. There are only 19 B-2As currently operational. This is getting into "strike Iran" territory. The B-2 deployment is expected to last until May 1st. This lines up with what was reported in Trump's letter to Iran, stating that Iran has two months (March and April) to get to the negotiating table for a nuclear deal, otherwise the US will consider taking military action.

Yesterday, Israeli forces attempted to advance into the village of Kuwaya, west of Daraa in southern Syria, but were confronted by locals and fighters from the Islamic Resistance Front in Syria, who have previously clashed with Israeli forces

As a result, airstrikes were called in to support the advance of the IDF, leading to the deaths of at least 7 Syrian civilians. Yesterday alone, Israeli military actions led to the forced displacement of hundreds of Syrian families in the south. Earlier, Israeli warplanes attacked the 'T-4' Air Base in Palmyra. The IDF also seized multiple weapons and ammunition boxes in southern Syria.

Daily Israeli attacks on Syria have become the norm, often resulting in civilian deaths. Israel continues to not only strengthen and expand its occupation of Syria but also ensure that Syria is fully disarmed, denying it the right to have military equipment, even when Syria poses no threat, militarily or even in rhetoric.

Surely the HTS coalition will crumble if they allow IOF to conquer territory with impunity.

I can’t imagine a world where the US carries out a preemptive nuclear strike on a non-nuclear nation.

If Iran sunk a carrier fleet that might happen though.

A report by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO in Latin America and the Caribbean) indicates that Argentina, with a 9.4% decline, was the country that suffered the largest industrial decline in the world in 2024, the first year of Javier Milei's administration. Eduardo Bolsonaro Flees Brazil - Brian Mier Telesur

Son of former president faces possible treason charges for working with US politicians to attack Brazil's judiciary.

Article

Brazilian Liberal Party lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of indicted former President Jair Bolsonaro and South American representative for CPAC, took a leave of absence from Congress today and announced he will remain in the United States to escape "political persecution" and pressure U.S. officials to impose sanctions against Alexandre de Moraes—one of Brazil's 11 Supreme Court Ministers—in an attempt to keep his father out of jail.

It is no secret that Eduardo Bolsonaro has been close to Steve Bannon and other key figures in Donald Trump's circle since 2018. Similarities in billionaire-funded social media tactics used by Trump and the Bolsonaros are living testament to this, and the closeness that Eduardo has to leaders of the American far right is also demonstrated by his presence at the January 5, 2021, "war council" meeting in Washington, hosted by Mike Lindell on the eve of the U.S. Capitol invasion.

Eduardo Bolsonaro immediately swung into action, contacting friends in the Republican Party and private sector alike. The next day, Rumble and Truth Social filed a frivolous lawsuit against Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who was in charge of the investigation against his father. On February 24, Republican Congressman Rich McCormick released a public letter to President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in which he called for punitive actions against Moraes, including "Magnitsky sanctions, immediate visa bans, and economic penalties."

On February 27, Workers' Party Congressmen Lindbergh Farias and Rogério Correia filed a criminal complaint with the Attorney General's Office against Eduardo Bolsonaro for conspiring against Brazil with members of a foreign government.

"The individual in question, completely disconnected from reality and acting against Brazil's national interests, is encouraging a foreign government to impose retaliatory measures against his own country and one of the justices of the Supreme Federal Court," reads a section of the complaint. Judging him a probable flight risk due to his network of connections in the American far right, they requested that the Federal Police confiscate his passport. Time has proven them correct, but the police did not act quickly enough.

On March 13, the net began to tighten around Jair Bolsonaro as the Attorney General's Office officially upheld the indictment against Bolsonaro and his cronies, after a procedural period in which they were allowed to present their defense arguments. The Supreme Court then set March 25 as the date for the final review of evidence before formally setting a trial date.

This put Eduardo Bolsonaro in a quandary. With a complaint already filed against him for illegally abusing the power of his office to lobby for intervention in Brazil's internal affairs by a foreign government—a crime so serious that, in theory, it could result in charges of treason—he had to choose between keeping his position as Congressman and complying with national security laws, or renouncing and moving to Florida, like so many right-wing Latin American politicians before him.

Bolsonaro is claiming his leave will be temporary, but going on leave of absence will not shield him from criminal prosecution for abuse of authority, crimes against the judiciary, and violation of national security laws. Like all Members of Congress, he enjoys a certain level of parliamentary immunity, but can still be investigated and tried by the same Supreme Court that he has been publicly attacking for the past five years. So if, as he announced on his social media today, his plan is to stay in the U.S. to find some way to "punish Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes," he will probably have to stay there for a long time. The question is, how much damage can he do to Brazil’s national sovereignty while he’s up there?

[–] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro (who is already ineligible) becomes defendant in coup investigation. Bolsonaro complains after the verdict, accuses the Chinese government, the University of São Paulo, the Workers' Party (Lula's party) and Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes of persecuting him.

Bolsonaro says that Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes personally attacked him by mentioning the day Bolsonaro got up on a stage and shouted that he was “infuckable”. And Bolsonaro also insists that there was fraud in the 2018 and 2022 elections, in the case of 2018, he says he won in the first round, but never presented proof. Bolsonaro also said that Lula da Silva and Vice President Geraldo Alckimin were terrorists because they had both met with members of Hamas in Iran. He also said that Lula sold Brazil to China and that he needs support from the United States.

He also accuses the Chinese government and the Brazilian left of having lobbied to block any attempt to grant amnesty to him, his sons and his allies who were arrested for the January 8th coup attempt. Bolsonaro once again calls Lula corrupt and says that Lula's voters are criminals who take government handouts instead of working. He also says that his last demonstration in Rio de Janeiro had 3.5 million people present there in favor of amnesty, while the University of São Paulo said there were only 18,000 people.

In my extremely local local news. The person I ran campaign for to get elected as local councillor is now being offered the role of mayor after just 4 months in the role.

If the Labour party weren't doing everything they can to ruin their chances in the next election I sincerely believe I would be able to turn this person into an MP.

Russia To Support the Black Sea Agreement When Acceptable Guarantees Exist - Telesur English

Article

The Kremlin demands the clearest, most concrete, verifiable, and enforceable guarantees before the conflict can be resolved. On Tuesday, Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergey Lavrov suggested that his country refused to approve a trilateral joint statement on Monday following negotiations between the U.S., Russian, and Ukrainian delegations in Riyadh.

“The U.S. wanted to issue some kind of joint statement, but we explained once again that both presidents… agreed to move forward in such a way that no more baseless documents would be approved,” he said, referring to the phone conversation between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump that took place a week ago.

“We first agreed that, based on the agreement between Putin and Trump, U.S. and Russian experts would travel. But it seems that Washington is so eager to act that they decided something had to be formalized as soon as possible, so they invited the Ukrainians, who arrived a day earlier,” Lavrov said.

“It is no big secret that… the Americans wanted, in some way, to place the Ukrainians and Russians in adjacent rooms and organize shuttle diplomacy between them,” he added, insisting that Moscow wants Washington to ensure that Kyiv fulfills its commitments when signing a document with the opposing side in the conflict.

Lavrov emphasized that Russia demands “the clearest, most concrete, verifiable, and enforceable guarantees and mechanisms possible” before the Ukrainian conflict can be resolved. More specifically, Russia demanded “clear guarantees” from Ukraine to resume the implementation of the Black Sea Initiative, a truce that was in effect between June 2022 and July 2023 and was the main topic discussed in the Saudi capital.

“Our position is simple: we cannot trust that person’s word,” Lavrov said, referring to President Zelensky. Clear guarantees, he added, “can only result from an order from Washington to Zelensky and his team to do it this way and not any other way. I believe our American partners understood our message,” he concluded.
