We just had a thread about biopunk centered media, I would love a similar collection about movies and TV shows about solar punk. Here we go:

I really loved the show the peripheral. I know it's not really centered around solar punk per se, but it happens to be placed in a world where the main character goes from place to place in a solar charged e-bike.

What's your favorite show or movie set in a solar punk world?

Treasure Planet has solar sails used as the energy source for propulsion for ships.

Its also an absolutely amazing movie!

Came here to say this, the solar sails are beautiful in action. Other movies that have a moment with solar: WALL-E, Star Wars Episode 2 (solar sails appear again)

Not exactly the gerne I'm looking for, but will watch it anyways. Looks interesting

  • Okja? Does that count.
  • Some Miyazaki movies.
  • Tomorrowland

Tomorrowland looks awesome. Thanks!

I'm not too keen on Tomorrowland. it's got a lot of great man theory messages in it, which isn't surprising since it was written and directed by Brad Bird, a notorious Objectivist

Tbf yes. Not particularly a fan myself

In some sense Waterworld qualifies.

Also Cloud Atlas in some of the settings, though a bit more primitivist

Waterworld. I agree, mixes with diselpunk. Cloud Atlas, at least the futuristic part.

Princess Mononoke from studio Ghibli.

Edit: whoops, I meant 'NausicaΓ€ of the Valley of the Wind'

[–] KinNectar@kbin.run 10 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Nausicaa is more solar/windpunk than Princess Mononoke, which is more primitivist.

[–] kozy138@lemm.ee 4 points 10 months ago

Shoot, that's the one I was actually thinking of!

Most of Miyazakis films

[–] Nomad@infosec.pub 3 points 10 months ago

Awesome but not really solarpunk.

[–] KinNectar@kbin.run 5 points 10 months ago

Maybe Atlantis? Also maybe the fremen parts of Dune, though that again is more primitivist in some respects.

I'd say overall Solarpunk still lacks its cornerstone film.

John Carter has ships that "fly on light"

Not sure if Sunshine qualifies, but its an excellent sci-fi with the sun theme

[–] xilliah@beehaw.org 0 points 10 months ago

Well, not solar punk but environmentalist. Travelers. It's a show about people traveling back in time to stop climate collapse, it's pretty good.
