You have social media addiction, but there is only enough new content to support 20 minutes of doom scrolling every evening

[–] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 70 points 2 months ago (2 children)

It's reddit methadone. I'm doing much better

[–] mrslt@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

Oh, gods yes. Never looked back. This place is like reddit, but with the chill, friendly vibes of Usenet.

[–] pineapplelover@lemm.ee 27 points 2 months ago

I actually scroll through lemmy a lot more than 20 minutes. So the content here has clearly grown.

You underestimate my ADHD

People on the fediverse should post more pictures of the food they are eating. That would really turn things around here.

You won’t know until you open the box.

[–] rickdg@lemmy.world 34 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Me trying to infinite scroll but the algorithm is just new posts in chronological order. What is this, a reasonable platform that I don’t feel like using 24/7?

[–] MutilationWave@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Me- Top 6 hours. Browse on and off throughout the day, then when I get low on content I hit top 6 hours again and keep going. But I'm not on my phone that much especially on work days.

[–] chrislowles@lemm.ee 2 points 2 months ago

I set my front page to Top 24 Hours, that's what my Reddit front page was set to so it's mainly for familiarity.

[–] SandbagTiara2816@lemmy.dbzer0.com 33 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Maybe it’s just me, maybe it’s the algorithms, but I do notice a difference in how I feel after spending time on the Lemmy or Mastodon vs Instagram or LinkedIn

[–] SandbagTiara2816@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 2 months ago

No, I just never feel good after using it

[–] grue@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

That sounds like the step right before hitting rock bottom.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

I mainly do it to see if there are any new security breaches at LinkedIn.

[–] pemptago@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 months ago

Idk what your feed looks like but if it's like mine-- posts hyping ai juxtaposed with posts from artists that are (rightfully) upset that their work is being used without their consent to train generative ai in a push to replace artists or devalue their work-- linkedin can feel pretty dire and soul sucking.

[–] ignotum@lemmy.world 20 points 2 months ago

I'm addicted to crack, but it's fine since it's organic locally-sourced fairtrade crack

[–] Vidgam@lemmy.wtf 8 points 2 months ago

How can you be addicted to this small town of a social media😭

[–] AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The photos of flowers and Star Trek dad jokes cancel out the sense of doom.

[–] dharmacurious@slrpnk.net 4 points 2 months ago (2 children)

There is a flower photo side of Lemmy? Sharesies?

[–] hollyberries@programming.dev 3 points 2 months ago

Maybe not on Lemmy but on the microblog side there is #bloomscrolling

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yeah what the hell I don't get flower Lemmy!

[–] dharmacurious@slrpnk.net 3 points 2 months ago

Okay, it's up to us. And by us, I mean you, because I can't mod a community. You are the foretold one, who shall create and curate flower Lemmy!

[–] aniki@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Message boards arent social media.

[–] atro_city@fedia.io 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I too only think of shit like twitter, tiktok, insta, youtube, etc. to be social media, but drawing the line is difficult. Why aren't forums social media? What are the qualities (or lack thereof) that define social media and those that don't?

[–] jawa21@lemmy.sdf.org 11 points 2 months ago (2 children)

With social media, you follow people, not topics and people for some batshit insane reason are willing to use their real name and face. With a forum, or in this case link aggregation platform, you follow topics. There is no real incentive or reason to follow an individual on a forum.

[–] aniki@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I know none if you cunts IRL and I'm going to keep it that way. My Facebook is full of people I hang out with in the flesh.

[–] windlas@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 months ago

Hey want to grab a beer?

[–] atro_city@fedia.io 1 points 2 months ago

That does sounds like a reasonable definition. An in a meme community of all places.

Hear me out, I genuinely want to know what someone thinks of this idea.

We have Life Phone 3 coming soon and some good e-ink options.

I have been thinking about one of those e-ink box Palmas and putting a minimalist launcher on it making it my primary work device or get away from the world device.

My Pixel 8 Pro is running GrapheneOS so my primary phone would manage my worldly needs in a private manner while my Boox would handle my get away needs for just the essentials. Reading and browsing nothing more.

I would lock the device down with a child google account and Google's family link app. This could see screen time prevent launcher changing and unnecessary app downloads my primary phone could manage it under a segmented Google profile in GrapheneOS. I think I would find myself to annoyed to even bother allowing app downloads so I would just install what is felt the phone was necessary for. A basic web browser, minimalist launcher and reading apps, lemmy and maybe Reddit. It would cut downy screentime a lot I think.

[–] Lifter@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 2 months ago

It's still too easy to install apps. You xan just type a parent's password on the kid's device to continue.
