Lemm.ee didn't defederate, is hitting the bong

I can block instances. It takes like 2 seconds

[–] DakRalter@thelemmy.club 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I've blocked lemmygrad on connect, but their posts still show up on this community.

[–] kariboka@bolha.forum 2 points 1 year ago

why block Lemmygrad?

[–] girl@lemm.ee 0 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Which app lets you block instances?

[–] zurchpet@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Connect for Lemmy lets you block instances.

[–] Scubus@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I have heard a lot about the other apps, but this is the first time someone is using the same app as me! Connect is fuckin great!

[–] BossDj@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

Yep I'm using connect

prime spot to watch all the drama unfold 😎

And then there's me, who's just self hosting precisely to follow whomever the heck I want to instead of who the admins haven't gotten angry with yet

To be fair, I've seen a few quality memes from the hexies, so I've just been scrolling past the dumb stuff

[–] ComradePorkRoll@lemmy.ml -1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I've seen more people whining about HexBear than I've seen posts by HexBear. As far as the "tankie" stuff goes, it really seems like people think tankies are anyone who's looked at the Communist Manifesto. They couldn't tell you anything about where the term comes from.

[–] kariboka@bolha.forum 2 points 1 year ago

They are afraid of the real left that does not give a pass for imperialism and colonialism

Neolibs pissed at the commies for coming into their communities and talking shit, commies pissed at neolibs for calling out their troll behavior in newly federated instances and doubling down on it. Mix it with new fed users who are still not quite sure how federation works or what it means, sprinkle in different blocking abilities depending on app of choice and you've got Tuesday in the fediverse.

Meanwhile they're all missing amazing content and niche communities like the raccoon community and the diy home automation project community, to name a few of my favorites.

[–] mycorrhiza@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

where's the raccoon community?

[–] Hank@kbin.social 0 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Generalizing anyone who argues against tankies as neolibs isn't portraying the situation correctly.

One part of the entertainment on this website is seeing the bizarre way political field is viewed.

tankies are authoritarian bootlickers, meaning they support the Russian invasion, deny the Tiananmen Square massacre and the Uyghur genocide, etc

[–] kariboka@bolha.forum 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Is the CIA Tankie? Because they deny the Uyghur "genocide"

[–] girl@lemm.ee 0 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

No, they didn’t. Some state department lawyers (so not the CIA, also obligatory FUCK the CIA) were unable to prove intent to eradicate the Uyghur people, but found plenty of evidence of mass imprisonment, torture, forced labor, and forced sterilization. Lemmy comments aren’t international court so I don’t have to prove intent to say that forced sterilization on any level is genocide, which it is according to the Genocide Convention.

~The cautious conclusions of State Department lawyers do not constitute a judgment that genocide did not occur in Xinjiang but reflects the difficulties of proving genocide […]~

~The Genocide Convention enumerates five categories of genocide, starting with the killing of members of a protected group but also including acts aimed at preventing a victim’s ability to bear children and forcibly separating children from their communities. Critics of the State Department’s legal stance have argued that it has focused too heavily on the first category, mass killing, and not enough on the other categories. In the case of China, these critics note, there is little evidence that it is engaging in mass killings of Uighurs and other minorities, many of whom have been subjected to indoctrination and pressed into forced labor. But evidence that it is carrying out other forms of genocide abounds, Beth Van Schaack, a visiting professor at Stanford Law School’s Center for Human Rights and International Justice, wrote in a recent post on Just Security.~

~“For example, the torture, rape and sexual violence committed against Uyghurs likely constitute genocide ‘by causing serious bodily and mental harm’—the second type of genocide recognized by the Convention,” she wrote. “Likewise, the deplorable living conditions of incarcerated Uyghurs may constitute genocide by ‘deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about [their] physical destruction’—the third form of genocide.”~

~Forced sterilization: https://www.bmj.com/content/375/bmj.n3124.full~

~China’s own documents provide evidence of forced sterilization (I should’ve led with this one, big ticket item here): https://jamestown.org/program/sterilizations-iuds-and-mandatory-birth-control-the-ccps-campaign-to-suppress-uyghur-birth-rates-in-xinjiang/~

PLEASE LEARN WHO ADRIAN ZENZ IS AND STOP CITING HIM

Your sources are 1) the State Department saying “our biggest lie is no longer tenable but we’re not backing down that easy” while giving no evidence for anything, 2) a paywalled decision from an unofficial tribunal that appears to just be some random fucking people in the UK, and 3) Adrian fucking Zenz, an infamous propagandist who has been caught lying and misrepresenting data numerous times, including in that report

Please find better sources.

Zenz is cited everywhere, and you should always check for his name. Ask me tomorrow if you want more examples of him lying. Form your own conclusions, but don’t look to that guy.

[–] girl@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You’re right, a “scholar” who refuses to admit he made a mistake and instead tries to brush it away as not paying close attention to his work (??? that’s worse, not better) should never be considered a legitimate source, so let’s toss him out all together. You should consider being equally critical of your own sources. They are 1) a twitter-like thread which is sourcing 2) Chinese state media, who of course will deny the allegations. The entire rebuttal by the CCP and this person is written in English, everything except the source document itself. This makes it impossible for people who don’t speak Chinese to fact check these numbers themselves, and makes it very easy for the CCP to manipulate data, which it has a history of doing (like with Tiananmen Square).

I have spent my morning reading the UN Human Rights report “OHCHR Assessment of human rights concerns in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, People’s Republic of China”. I strongly recommend you read it in it’s entirety, though the most relevant section on reproductive rights starts on page 32 (page 34 of the PDF). It concludes that there is credible evidence of forced birth control and forced sterilization, disproportionately impacting Uyghur populations.

This document does not attempt to define the extensive human rights violations as genocide. However, drawing my own conclusion based on the different types of genocide as defined by the Genocide Convention, it’s genocide.

The twitter thread (nitter is a twitter mirror) uses the same data Zenz uses. But also, you should consider reading the rest of it. Zenz was not saying he made a mistake or that he should have paid more attention, he was saying that about his critics. He then answered the criticisms with more statistical sleight of hand that he doubled down on.

SUMMARY OF THE STATISTICAL SLEIGHT OF HAND OUTLINED IN THE LINK.

The statistic Zenz gives — that “80% of net IUD insertions in China were in XJ” — is extremely misleading because the percent is not out of 100. Using his math, many provinces have percentages below 0, because we are comparing net values. When you add up net values for all of China, negatives and positives cancel, giving a small denominator.

(Xinjiang insertions - removals) / (China insertions - removals) = a nonsense percentage, potentially negative, potentially dividing by zero

If you add up Xinjiang, Henan and Hebei you get 210%

So it's not just a simple mistaken wording, the statistic itself was fundamentally nonsense from the start.

To drive the point home: In 2014, per the twitter thread, Xinjiang net insertions were roughly the same as in 2018, but China net insertions were much higher, so Xinjiang’s percent was only 2.5% rather than 80%, even though there was no significant change in Xinjiang.

Which brings me to the next point: There is a time element to the story. Less-developed provinces, where access to reproductive health services is still expanding, will have more net insertions, because there are fewer older people removing old IUDs. But over the years, insertions and removals will balance out, and can even dip negative in aging populations that have had IUD access for a long enough time. An underdeveloped province that is still expanding reproductive health access will have more net insertions than other provinces. It is expected that provinces will have high net insertions early in that timeline.

What's missing is the actual number of IUDs in Xinjiang, which would be illuminating.

I did read the full thread, I must have misread his comment about a “mistake” though. But once I realized he was a dishonest, untrustworthy “scholar” I completely stopped arguing his point. I even struck my sources from my first comment, as at least the first is based on his “research” and there is no point in arguing about false/nonsensical data.

You may note that the UN Human Rights report never cites Zenz or any IUD data at all. It comes to the forced birth control and forced sterilization conclusion through other data and interviews. Did you get a chance to read through the UN report?

[–] mycorrhiza@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I've read through the reproductive rights section of the report but only some of the citations, and I'm still looking for the interviews.

The OHCHR report does cite Zenz in citation #140 a few times, on page 19 and continuing into the footnote on page 20 of the pdf.

Citation #140 is for a statistic that in certain counties 10–20% of the adult "ethnic population" (the report's words) were detained.

The footnote mentions Zenz's name twice, but also mentions Xinjiang Police Files, which is Zenz again.

I'm still looking for the 40 interviews. It would be really interesting to hear what they have to say. Speaking before seeing them, I'm not sure I can have full confidence in them when I'm aware of so many instances where western governments and their allies have produced false witness testimony to justify foreign policy, e.g., the Nayirah testimony before the Gulf War, witness accounts of Iraqi WMDs before the Iraq War, fictitious witness accounts of a genocide in Libya before the NATO bombing campaign that obliterated the country, and a large number of North Korean defector testimonies that have fallen apart under scrutiny, as reported by the Guardian. This is how consent is manufactured. America is engaged in a trade war with China and hostilities are escalating in the South China Sea, and these activities require consent from legislators and the public. But I'm not going to discount the interviews either — it's evidence that has to be stacked up with other evidence and then appraised as a whole.

[–] kariboka@bolha.forum -2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This smells like racism against Chinese. At this point you want it to be true so you can justify your hate towards the people.

[–] girl@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I’m trying to have a good faith conversation and you come at me with an ad hominem attack. I would love for it to not be true, I don’t want genocide anywhere, but I believe the evidence of my eyes. I’ve read the entire UN report. Have you?

[–] mycorrhiza@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago

heads up, that's a different person, not me

[–] dRLY@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

LG/HB are vanguard af and we doesn't afraid of anything! I have this account because I made it around the same time I made my LG account and like that Lemmy.ml is pretty good for normies (no hate) of various kinds. Joined HB long before it federated and after the CTH subreddit was quarantined. Both places are much more chill than folks think. HB is much more trollie and should be taken with more than a pinch of salt. LG is much more serious and strict, but you just need to be clear in phrasing things in good-faith if asking questions. Are there dicks on both? Yes, just like there are on here and any other instance. But I think they both benefit more from lurking for a while if not used to non-liberal leftist spaces. Feel free to downvote all you want if you disagree or whatever...or are right-wing of course. #PunchNazisIntoTheDirt

[–] Jax@sh.itjust.works -2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I got called a bigot by 7 or 8 hexadytes for suggesting that when people finish transitioning they're no longer trans. Cuz they're done.

HB is toxic, if anyone is even on the fence about trans rights and they talk to those people? I bet, if any of them were actually aware of HB, conservatives would fucking LOVE that community. "Look at all these unstable freaks! This is the trans agenda!" or whatever other dogshit they might spew about trans people.

[–] ifsocialismwasabear@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Honestly, yours its a weird take. it is based as if being trans is something to be cured and overcome instead of something that defines you, even after transitioning. also throwing another trans people under the bus is not as good as a strategy as you think.

[–] Jax@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Why does being trans define you?

If your entire goal is to become what you feel you're meant to be, then why would being trans be anything other than a temporary state?

it is based as if being trans is something to be cured and overcome instead of something that defines you, even after transitioning

Lol, no you just assumed all of that and have no causal reasoning for it. Just like all the other hexbear users!

also throwing another trans people under the bus is not as good as a strategy as you think

What are you even fucking saying? How can you be so braindead to treat acceptance as some underhanded "trans people are mentally ill" message, and then make the other MASSIVE leap to me throwing trans people under the bus? Actually, do you even know what that phrase means? Because you used it incorrectly.
