Well, Maryland is kinda the South.
It is south of the Mason Dixon Line.
It's always been in a bit of a limbo. Baltimore had riots during the Civil War between pro-Confederates and pro-Unionists (most of the Unionists were German immigrants interestingly since they tended to lean more left at the time).
Baltimore: where the industrial decay of the North meets the casual racism of the South.
Washington D.C.: Southern Efficiency and Northern Hospitality (ascribed to JFK)
