But the dirty hobbitses look to the left and Mithrandir is looking to the right. Couldn't the artists have flipped it, so the perspctive isn't mixed up? Or am I misunderstanding the rules of composition?

The Hobbits are to the right of Gandolf.

The panels are moments in time, not spacel representations of where the actors are.
