I’m down here working the hurricane in Florida. I’ve been babysitting a downed tree across the road for the past 5 hours. I’ve been watching movies on the steam deck the entire time and it’s saying I still have 4:41 left of battery. This thing is awesome.

1TB OLED model.

I've looked everywhere online to see if there are any good tutorials to make it run well and there are only a few. So I have decided to make my own.

So first, I am on Proton 9.0-3. There are two good ways to play, one at 45 fps and one at 30 fps (PS4 runs like this)

  • Display:
    • Resolution - 1280x720 (1280x800 doesn't seem to work)
    • V-sync - Off
    • Luminance - 500 (looks better on OLED Steam Deck) (LCD might look better with 600)
  • On Steam Deck - PERFORMANCE SETTINGS:
    • Use per-game profile - On
    • Frame Limit - OLED - 45 FPS, LCD - 40 FPS

For 45 fps (40-45 while in open world, 35-40 in more dense areas)

  • Graphics:
    • Framerate - 60 fps
    • Resolution - 100% (75% will provide better performance at a slightly worse image quality)
    • Preset - Custom
    • Model LOD - Average
    • TRAM - Average
    • Anisotropic Filtering - Average
    • Geomapping - Off
    • Lighting - Average
    • Shadows - Low (Average shows very slightly better shadows but the performance is worse)
    • Ambient Occlusion - Average
    • Anti-aliasing - TAA (FXAA looks sharper and doesn't really change performance)
    • Motion Blur - On (This is a preference)
    • Filtering - Average
    • ALL NVIDIA Options - Off

For 30 fps (Without an fps limit it runs around 40 fps)

  • Graphics:
    • Framerate - 60 fps
    • Resolution - 100% (75% will provide better performance at a slightly worse image quality)
    • Preset - Custom
    • Model LOD - High
    • TRAM - High
    • Anisotropic Filtering - High
    • Geomapping - On
    • Lighting - High
    • Shadows - High
    • Ambient Occlusion - High
    • Anti-aliasing - TAA (FXAA looks sharper and doesn't really change performance)
    • Motion Blur - On (This is a preference)
    • Filtering - High
    • ALL NVIDIA Options - Off

If you use the highest preset it runs the same but has a random stutter every 2 seconds.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask!

Title pretty much says it all.

For those who don't know: a few days ago, Derek Yu (creator of Spelunky) along with a bunch of other talented people came out with "UFO 50", a retro game collection showcasing 50 beloved 80s classics by legendary studio UFO Soft, for the LX Home Computer console (all of which are made up and never existed).

Basically, it's one of those Sega or Namco throwback collections, but if all the games were by modern designers doing retro games with artful intention (so you wind up with stuff like 8-bit turn-based roguelikes and deckbuilders).

It fucking rules. And it also plays beautifully on the Deck, despite not yet being Deck verified on Steam. I've been playing it for days and haven't seen a single bug. Highly recommend.

I've completely moved to portable and I honestly hope the current era of handheld PC gaming makes a dent in the required specifications of new release games (by decreasing them obviously and making them more handled friendly).

To include spec requirements and storage. 100gb+ games? Unnecessary perhaps?

I realize the game isn't for everyone, but Midnight Suns is highly underrated.

It is verified, I have it set to 40fps and 10 tdp so the battery life is great. And the way the game is structured where you craft/research/talk to heroes before the mission, and then talk to heroes/explore after a mission makes it perfect for short sessions. And there's always the 1 more day attitude that kept me playing for a long time. I just replayed the game again with New Game + and still had the same enjoyment. I can't say the same for other games that's for sure.

TL;DR - If you use XR glasses from VITURE, XREAL, RayNeo, Rokid, or TCL, gaming on deck just got a huge upgrade! (video)

Hey Steam Deck fam,

It's been a long time since I posted here, so let me reintroduce myself: I'm the developer of a Decky Loader plugin called XR Gaming that's built to provide 3DoF features for the most popular XR glasses from VITURE, XREAL, RayNeo, Rokid, and TCL. See the full list of supported models.

I'm back to announce that version 1.0 of the plugin just released, so here's what it does: * Virtual Display mode - "pin" your game so it doesn't follow your head movements. Enable Side-by-side so the display can be pulled in closer (like a real monitor) or moved further away to reduce eye strain or play games that support 3D side-by-side. * VR-Lite mode - head tracking in first and third-person games creates a VR-like experience for non-VR games (doesn't require SteamVR, etc...). * Follow mode - Resize and reposition the display, put it in the corner of your display or just make it smaller so it's easier to see the edges. Enable Smooth follow so the screen glides to follow you and smoothes out bumps and jerks. * Virtual display and smooth follow modes give you the ability to zoom-in for a more IMAX-like experience (this crops the display, but you can use head movements to look to the edges) or enable a curved display that wraps around you for easier viewing.

A couple new requirements: * Steam OS version 3.6.15 or later, which at the moment is only in the Steam OS Beta channel. * To update, hit the Steam button, go to Settings, System, and choose System Update Channel Beta option. After you've updated this, restarted, checked for updates, and installed everything, scroll down near the bottom of this same view and verify the OS version is 3.6.15 or later. * If you're on an older version of Steam OS, the plugin will fall back to Vulkan-only mode and behave like before this update. * I'll post to my Reddit profile when this gets to Stable, so follow me for that update if you don't want to switch to Beta * Decky Loader version 3.0 or later

Here's what's on the horizon: * Multi-monitor support for Breezy Desktop for productivity on GNOME (in progress) * Native KDE port of Breezy Desktop * Monado integration * 6DoF? OpenTrack?

I almost never post to this sub, so if you want to stay abreast of the latest developments, I post regularly on my Reddit profile, Discord, Ko-fi, less frequently on YouTube, or you can follow me on GitHub.

That's all for now. Enjoy!

Two for me.

Outer Wilds - super cool concept, tons of fun in the beginning, but when the novelty of exploration/discovery wore off and there were very specific tasks to do, it became tedious for me personally. Definitely a patience issue but my patience is reserved for taking care of my kid I don’t have as much patience for my entertainment

Dave the Diver - love the fishing and sushi parts. The story with the sea people became to be a drag. And I’m objective oriented and there is just way too much going on. Fans of the game say you can just pick and choose what you want but my mind doesn’t work like that either so it was a little overwhelming for me

Obviously expect this thread to be full of hot takes but that’s what makes it fun!

My son went for a sleepover at his friend's house.... I came home to find out he took my steam deck with him... it's a long weekend here and I was soooo looking forward to having a few drinks using my deck while on the couch and the wife watching some nonsense show in the background

I have to resort to actually using my PC!!! It's just not the same!
