I've always been huge into modern gaming and emulation as well as Ambernic and Retroid emulation handhelds.. like it's bad I've owned over 22 handhelds.. not including OEM ones... And I slept on the Steamdeck until the LCD 512GB was on sale for like 330. Then I pulled the trigger. Omg even if ya look at the deck just from an emulation standpoint with the performance plus the Emudeck software.. it's a freaking emulation handheld gamers dream.. but that's not all I can play all my old PC games flawlessly plus moderns stuff with the graphics turned down. And the ergonomics and SteamOS are just almost perfect. I'm just happy I finally own this machine now. It's literally my fave piece of hardware/software I've ever owned in my almost 40 years if living.

Hi all. I used to post a curated list of links for PC ports, decompilations, remakes, fan games, texture packs etc on this sub a while back but have been unable to do so because of the recent strict moderation. I was just reading the sub has had its moderation updated so I thought I'd see if I could post a link to my most up-to-date list. I have sent a message to the mods to see if I can post the list itself here (even after heavy editing before the mods still took it down) so if I get the go ahead I'll do that next.

Anyway, until then, here's the link, enjoy! And if you have anything cool you think should be added just let me know in the comments ๐Ÿ‘

I wasn't what someone could call a naysayer, but the deck for a long time felt a bit like a redundant luxury purchase, and not that useful if you already had other devices around the house like a Switch or console/PC. The games you could play on it were likely on other systems already. And I always heard people talking about how fast the battery would drain if you were playing major titles like Spiderman, Baldurs Gate 3 and others, basically requiring you play with this bulky brick like device tethered to a wall outlet. It kept me making me ask "What's the point then?".

I finally got an LCD model used and it's time to admit I was wrong. What I thought this entire time was just "your Steam library in handheld format" is actually just straight up the swiss army knife of gaming as a whole. It DOES do your Steam library, and in impressive form. But it's also a retro gaming machine. It can stream Xbox and Playstation. It can run games from other launchers. It can run games without any launchers at all. It can become a straight up PC if you get the right peripherals. What this thing is capable of doing seems to never end. You can never touch a AAA product in your entire time with this thing and you'll have thousands of hours of gameplay to enjoy, and for barely any extra money or sometimes no money at all if you already have a library amassed on PC.

I know posts like this are a dime a dozen on subs like these, but I just wish I got this device sooner. Maybe in a few years I'll upgrade to the OLED if it gets cheaper but for now I'm already very happy with my LCD model.

Good morning everyone!

I am writing today to let you know that the subreddit is under new moderation.

OK, not so much NEW, as old moderators with new permissions. The three mods we have right now have been here in this community for over a year, with very limited access to anything but the mod queue. We now have full access to everything here on the front and back ends.

/u/sweatycat is the top mod. They are incredibly experienced and a person of great integrity. I am on a couple of other mod teams with them.

/u/weebutt is another experienced mod in three other high traffic communities. They are an amazing person and a huge gamer.

As for me, /u/House_of_Suns - I am also an experienced mod in high traffic subreddits like /r/canada and /r/advice and /r/rareinsults.

We are all SteamDeck owners, and are passionate about this device. None of us work for Valve (too bad) - we are just unpaid volunteers who love the Deck. We all have other careers but will be here as often as we can.

What all three of us have in common is that we are deeply committed to this community, to your voices, and to earning your trust.

We don't pretend that you will always agree with us, but we promise to be as fair and transparent as possible as we move this subreddit forward. We will be looking for new mods here to help us serve the community. We hope to add experienced mods and maybe some brand new ones. Stay tuned.

IN THE MEANTIME, we have a lot of clean up to do. The automod needs to be adjusted. There is a mountain of modmail to tackle. I spent 4 hours in it last night and unbanned a number of users. We want to do a rules refresh with community input.

We know we've got work to do. Changes are coming. We plan to do a rules input thread this weekend.

Contact us in Modmail if you want, post here, or feel free to DM me directly.

Thank you all for your grace, your support, and your help as we reset our direction as a community.

More to come. Happy Friday!

/u/House_of_Suns

Hi all, like many of you I'm pretty sick of the constant low-effort deck pictures / 'Look what just arrived!' posts. I'm keen to hear about how people are using their decks in more interesting ways (Gaming or otherwise).

As an example, I'm a Japanese language learner, and I have Retroarch's AI translation feature mapped to one of the back paddels on the deck. When I come across some vocab I'd like a quick translation for, I can hit the button and after a couple of seconds a translation will be overlayed across all text on screen. Super helpful.

I could probably take this a step further by integrating a script that takes a screenshot of the original text and saves it in a folder for making revision cards at a later date, but I haven't quite got that far yet!

This subreddit has gone completely dead, only "this is my little docked setup" or "it finally arrived, what should I do next" posts, surely I can't be the only one who's bothered by this? It's like groundhog day every morning.

the steamdeck is an amazing piece of kit and deserves better.
