Use this thread to discuss whatever game you've been playing lately: old or new, AAA or indie, on any platform between Atari and XBox. Please don't just list off the games you're playing in your comment. Elaborate with your thoughts on the games and make it easier for other users to find what game you're talking about by putting the title in bold.

Also, please make sure to use spoiler tags if you're revealing anything about a game's plot that may significantly impact another player's experience who has not played the game yet, no matter how retro or recent the game is. You can find instructions on how to do so in the subreddit sidebar.

This thread is set to sort comments by 'new' on default.

One of my favorite parts of this sub used to be the GOTY threads because there'd always be a handful of games that I never heard of that would be passionately championed by like 3 people, and those games would often go on to be some of my favorites of the year. Since this sub doesn't do the official "year end wrap up threads" anymore, I thought I'd just make a special thread to ask people for their niche recommendations. We all know about the Astro Boys and Metaphors and FF Rebirths of the world, but what are the rest of us missing?

My recommendation is for Shadow of the Ninja Reborn. It's a traditional 2D action platformer (i.e., not Metroidvania), and - despite that being one of the most prolific genres in the history of video games - I think it's one of the best ever made. It really stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the likes of Rondo of Blood, Alien Soldier, and GNG Resurrection IMO. The quality may not be obviously apparent if you're a more casual enjoyer of the genre, but there's so much attention to the little details in the mechanics and level design that I really appreciate. The pixel art is also superbly detailed and expressive, even if it lacks the obvious "screenshot appeal" of something like a Blasphemous. If you like this genre, you absolutely need to give this game a go; its not just my personal "overlooked GOTY," but my GOTY overall!

As 2024 comes to an end, what games confirmed or expected to come out in 2025 are you most excited for and hoping to play?

Some fairly obvious answers for many are Grand Theft Auto 6, Elden Ring: Nightein, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, ~~a Silksong release date REVEAL at least~~ and the like. But what other games, in particular indie and lesser-known games are you personally looking forward to?

Howdy, folks!

Step into the dusty boots of a saloon owner in the heart of the untamed Wild West. I’m an indie dev working tirelessly on this game, usually by lantern light after my day job, to bring the grit, glory, and charm of the frontier to life.

Picture this: it’s the late 19th century, the Civil War is behind us, but the real fight is just beginning—for survival and success. The sun blazes high, horses thunder past, and the scent of gunpowder mingles with the twang of a fiddle. And right there, in the middle of it all, is your saloon—a diamond in the rough waiting to shine.

Links

Game Mechanics

This is more than just slingin’ whiskey and mendin’ broken chairs—it’s about carving your legend in the West.

  • Build and customize your saloon: Patch up that old watering hole and turn it into the hottest spot west of the Mississippi.
  • Serve a cast of colorful characters: From sharp-shootin’ cowboys to shady outlaws, every customer’s got a story (and a thirst).
  • Expand your empire: Add poker rooms, better gear, and even some high-stakes entertainment to keep the cash rollin’ in.
  • Keep the peace: Not every patron comes in peace; watch your back and settle disputes like a true gunslinger.
  • Explore the frontier: Step outside the saloon to meet locals, strike deals, or discover hidden treasures in the scorching desert.
  • Face the unexpected: Droughts, rival saloon owners, and wild stampedes—just another day in paradise.

Key Features

  • Rebuild, expand, and customize your saloon to fit your vision.
  • Serve and manage a diverse crowd, each with unique quirks and needs.
  • Dive into the drama of the frontier with dynamic NPCs and unpredictable events.
  • Build relationships with locals to unlock perks and untold stories.
  • Explore the wild, lawless land beyond your doors.

Current State

The game’s bones are strong, with saloon-building, customer interactions, and exploration already in place. Now I’m fine-tunin’ the details to make every swingin’ door creak and every shot of whiskey hit just right.

Goals and Timeline

I’m ridin’ hard for a 2025 release on Steam for PC. If the stars align (and the feedback rolls in), I’ll saddle up for console ports too.

I reckon this game’ll be a wild ride, and I’d love to have y’all along for the journey. Wishlist on Steam, drop your thoughts below, or join the Discord saloon—your feedback means the world to me. Now, let’s ride!

Hi and Happy Holidays! I’m Courtney, the solo developer of the upcoming ARPG Reality Break, inspired by my love for Diablo as well as all things science fiction. I started my game dev career in 2002, working on real-time strategy games like Age of Mythology, Age of Empires, Halo Wars, and Orcs Must Die. I felt a calling to go indie in 2014 and have launched a couple of games, but a few years ago decided it was time to put everything I could muster into making my dream game a reality – Reality Break, to be precise!

The idea for Reality Break came when I was facing yet another set of patch notes where my favorite D2 class, Sorceress, was nerfed. I wanted to make changes to the game that shaped it to my tastes, which is how the idea for Reality Break’s tagline came about: “Rewrite the Universe”. To fulfill that tagline, I created a Rewrite mechanic for my new game, and have made countless elements rewritable. For example, if you find a warship class weapon that won’t fit your ship, rewrite it to make it fit! If you’re finding missions too difficult or easy, rewrite them to increase the challenge (and rewards), or convert a negative crit chance modifier into a positive one. Rewrite your skills to reduce their cooldowns... or eliminate the cooldowns entirely. Rewrite a treasure crate into a Super Crate! Even the story itself can be rewritten to pursue alternate timelines.

I will be launching the game in early 2025 (so soon!), and have updated the demo many times based on player feedback (treating it as its own mini Early Access), including v0.17 just last month. I crave player feedback, so please let me know what you think if you check it out :).

TLDR: Hi I’m Courtney. My class got nerfed in Diablo so I developed my own sci-fi ARPG with a new Rewrite mechanic. Check out the demo and send me feedback!

Survive the presence of something impossible, and don’t let the shadows consume you!

Steam Page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3298940/Static_Dread/

The harbor authorities reactivated an ancient lighthouse, hoping to keep the seas navigable amidst the growing chaos. A lone keeper is dispatched to the forsaken island, tasked with manning the beacon.

The fate of passing vessels and the nearby town now rests in his hands. Far away, a wife and daughter wait for his return.

Trailer:

  • Mesmerizing tales of the sea
  • Strange characters
  • An atmosphere of unknowable horror
