I think a lot of people are still skeptical about VR games for a number of reasons, but I genuinely feel the latest update for the Luke Ross R.E.A.L. VR mod is a decent progression. I think many dedicated VR games can appear low-quality, especially when placed against their flatscreen counterparts. There just isn't the desire or investment to make AAA titles VR compatible. So it lies in the hands of modders such as Praydog and Luke Ross to offer what VR gamers desire. Sure, it's a niche audience (around 2% of users on Steam use a VR headset), but that is growing and as the cost of entry lowers, these flatscreen to VR conversions add to the expanding library of games available to newcomers and VR vets alike. Yep, VR isn't for everyone, again for a number of reasons. I get that.

As a dedicated Quest 3 user streaming wirelessly, I have had my reservations about Luke Ross's business model for selling his Alternate Eye Rendering VR Mod. Nonetheless, the R.E.A.L. VR V15 update marks a significant milestone worth celebrating, and it's exciting to know that further improvements are on the horizon.

Technical Advancements and Benefits

On a technical level, Ross has achieved a notable reduction in the overhead required to run this mod by cropping the edges that are out of view in the headset. This feature, reminiscent of one found in VorpX, frees up GPU power that can be redirected to enhance resolution. The result is smoother gameplay and a reduction in the headaches that can sometimes accompany VR sessions.

Implications for Gamers

So, what does this mean for gamers?

Lower spec GPUs now have a better chance of delivering a high-quality experience. The extreme ghosting that was a significant issue when using DLSS (or without it) has been substantially minimized, and distant details are much clearer. While the Aero headset still surpasses the Quest 3 in visual fidelity, as a PCVR gamer with a Quest 3, the experience now aligns more closely with what I believe should be the standard. With the RTX 4090, I can crank up the in-game resolution and enhance the graphics settings significantly.

A Much-Needed Improvement

If you've previously dismissed the mod due to its performance on lower spec GPUs, it's time to revisit it. The once fuzzy visuals have undergone a marked improvement, making the game much more enjoyable.

Conclusion

Although the mod does not support motion controls, they aren't essential for this game. What you do get is a AAA budget game that you can marvel at in VR, which is an impressive achievement in itself.

The "it's not proper VR without motion controls" is a valid stance. Yeh I get that. And, in some ways quite correct. But...it without those hands inside the game, does provide the same sense of immersion and belonging inside the game-world rather than outside of it.

As I've said numerous times before, being able to grab and touch inanimate objects is maybe VR's selling point, but most games are not afforded the same budget as AAA games, so it's a toss-up between immersion and quality. I find being able to touch and grab stuff is mostly not very well implemented outside of reloading weapons and aiming. Games like Job SIM do a great job of using motion controls for gameplay. But most games just use them as a gimmick feature.

The Rift CV1 released without motion controllers against the Vive wands. For months, many VR enthusiasts still enjoyed those VR games without motion controls (of which there were many).

Different strokes for different folks.

Luke Ross's VR mods, known as R.E.A.L. VR mods, are compatible with a variety of popular games. Here's a list of some of the games that his mods work with:

  • Atomic Heart
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • Dark Souls: Remastered
  • Elden Ring
  • Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
  • Ghostrunner
  • Grounded
  • Ghostwire: Tokyo
  • Hogwarts Legacy
  • Horizon Zero Dawn
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Stray
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
  • Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

These mods bring VR support to games that originally didn't have it, enhancing the gaming experience for VR enthusiasts

Areajugones - Alfonso Cánovas - Spanish - 8.2 / 10

Infinity Nikki is like that perfect outfit you didn't know you needed in your gaming closet. It's refreshing, beautiful, and surprisingly deep. In a gaming world dominated by action and conflict, this title reminds us that sometimes, what we really need is a space to be creative, help others, and yes, look fabulous while doing it.

CGMagazine - Jordan Biordi - 8 / 10

Infinity Nikki is a genuinely enjoyable game about exploring, forging friends and making pretty dresses, let down by an abundance of predatory monetization and unnecessary mobile design choices.

Digital Trends - Giovanni Colantonio - 3.5 / 5

Infinity Nikki is the stylish open-world game that players have been begging for.

DualShockers - Usama Mehmood - 8 / 10

Infinity Nikki is a delightful dress-up experience worth checking out on a whim. Its creative gameplay provides countless opportunities to create a perfect look for Nikki with near-limitless clothing options and accessories. While the open world may sometimes feel bland, the various activities and puzzles you discover pull the engagement levels back. Even during its uninteresting story beats, it'll surprise you with an awe-inspiring set-piece that'll make you adore the quality and effort put into its details. If it continues to expand the charming world of Mira even further with new story arcs and events, it'll surely be a top-notch adventure title that isn't too dependent on the controversial Gacha elements.

Eurogamer - Jessica Orr - 4 / 5

A true step forward for open-world gacha games, Infinity Nikki finally brings some much needed competition to the miHoYo monopoly.

Gamers Heroes - Blaine Smith - 90 / 100

Infinity Nikki radiates a charm that warms your heart, engages your mind, and sweeps you off your feet. It’s a refreshing and heartfelt take on the gacha formula, truly promising a little something for everyone.

IGN - Carli Velocci - 9 / 10

Infinity Nikki has deep open-world exploration, a quirky story, and some of the most beautiful in-game outfits you'll ever see – you just have to be ready to navigate a maze of menus to get them.

IGN Deutschland - Michael Cherdchupan - German - 8 / 10

Despite its gacha elements, Infinity Nikki is a delightful open-world adventure with a unique focus on fashion, charming world, and relaxing atmosphere.

Kakuchopurei - Jonathan Leo - 80 / 100

Long story short, this free-to-play adventure game is as whimsical as it gets from its plot to the nature of the game. And that's not a bad thing, as long as it's pulled off right. Infinity Nikki's got substance to back up that style.

PC Gamer - Mollie Taylor - 74 / 100

What Infinity Nikki lacks in difficulty, it makes up for with a gorgeous wardrobe and charmingly scenic world I can't stop poking around.

TheReviewGeek - Greg Wheeler - 7.5 / 10

Infinity Nikki is a blast to play. It’s a super chill dress-up game with nice platforming and a compelling enough story to stick with for the long-haul. The combat is super basic and honestly, the worst part of the game.

As far as Gachas go though, Infinity Nikki is a ton of fun. Sure, there are some issues with its core gameplay loop, and some annoyances here and there, but what’s here is enjoyable enough to make for a solid recommendation.

Atomix - Sebastian Quiroz - Spanish - 80 / 100

In an age where every JRPG offers us complex experiences, with hundreds of hours of content and multiple systems at our disposal, Fantasian Neo Dimension is a little baileys chocolate. The first bite is something everyone can appreciate, the sweetness immediately grabs the player, but once you get to the end of the bite, you're likely to feel something too strong for you, but at the same time it's addictive, and it's hard not to eat another one.

CGMagazine - Chris De Hoog - 8 / 10

Available for the first time on consoles, Fantasian Neo Dimension is a lovingly-crafted tribute to the RPG genre from some of its biggest pioneers.

Checkpoint Gaming - Charlie Kelly - 8 / 10

FANTASIAN Neo Dimension is a vibrant and whimsical RPG from some of the best that have ever done it. The incredibly rich storytelling and setting are bolstered by a quaint and gorgeous world to explore thanks to the striking diorama sets, charming characters and another stellar Nobuo Uematsu soundtrack. Though the game isn't without its frustrating grinds, it's more than the sum of its parts. This is a step forward for the turn-based genre thanks to meaningful and much-needed quality-of-life improvements in its tactical nature and pace-controlling Dimengion system. FANTASIAN Neo Dimension proves there is still so much excellence and magnificence to come from RPGs.

Destructoid - Steven Mills - 8.5 / 10

There's something special about Fantasian Neo Dimension that melds the old with the new to create an enthralling and nostalgic journey in a unique high-fantasy world that's simply a ton of fun to play.

Digitally Downloaded - Matt Sainsbury - 5 / 5

It’s hard to shake the feeling that Fantasian was a project designed to give several legends of the JRPG genre closure. By revising their great classic and both modernising and paying homage to it in equal measures, they can look back at their careers with the satisfaction of having completed a full journey of their own. For people that clearly love storytelling so much it’s hard to imagine a better way to finish up.

Digitec Magazine - Kevin Hofer - German - 5 / 5

With “Fantasian Neo Dimension”, “Final Fantasy” creator Hironobu Sakaguchi brings the feeling of the old PS1 JRPGs into the present day. Despite the obvious inspiration, the game doesn't feel outdated thanks to more modern gameplay elements, but on the contrary modern and challenging.

DualShockers - Christian Bognar - 9 / 10

Fantasian Neo Dimension is one of the best JRPGs I have played in a very long time, and that is saying a lot, considering we've had some great releases recently. It has a nostalgic feel to it that is reminiscent of the older Final Fantasy games, almost like stepping into a time machine. The trajectory system in combat is brilliant, it has an interesting story, and the difficulty is just right where it demands strategy while remaining fair throughout. The beautiful world made strictly from handmade dioramas is nothing short of extraordinary and is one of the most creative initiatives I've seen in gaming. Fantasian Neo Dimension does everything right for a turn-based JRPG, and anyone seeking their next great experience in the genre should look no further than this remarkable creation.

Eurogamer - Ed Nightingale - 4 / 5

The cult classic mobile RPG finally gets its due, for lovers of mechanics over story who can rise to the demands of its extreme challenge.

Evilgamerz - Christiaan Ribbens - Dutch - 8 / 10

Fantasian: Neo Dimension isn’t for everyone. The game is dated in style and structure, and the visual presentation may turn some off. But for fans of classic JRPGs, this is an absolute must-have. With a strong story and solid gameplay loop, Sakaguchi’s team has once again delivered a game that will stand the test of time. It may not be groundbreaking, but it does remind us of what made the genre so great back in the day.

GAMES.CH - Sven Raabe - German - 82%

Fantasian Neo Dimension succeeds wonderfully in making familiar turn-based battles appear fresh with an exciting twist. But the (somewhat predictable) mystery story and likeable main characters are also convincing. Although a few weaknesses prevent the game from reaching its full potential, this RPG adventure is not just for genre fans.

Hardcore Gamer - Chris Shive - 4 / 5

Fantasian: Neo Dimension is a modern take on the RPG formula. In many ways, it's similar to classic Final Fantasy games, but elements such as the trajectory aspect of battles and the Dimengeon help distinguish it from other titles the developers have previously worked on. The Dimengeon is an especially welcome addition to slow down the interruption that random encounters provide. The battles are enjoyable as they do require strategic planning, though playing on Hard difficulty can result in especially rough difficulty spikes later on. The rewarding battle system is complemented by the fantastic soundtrack and engaging story, reminiscent of some of the best classic RPGs. A couple characters can be grating and sometimes the controls feel like they could use some refinement, but Fantasian: Neo Dimension is a welcome challenge for anyone who is a fan of classic JRPGs.

Hobby Consolas - Álvaro Alonso - Spanish - 75 / 100

With Fantasian: Neo Dimension, the father and composer of Final Fantasy bring us a game that is a return to the origins of the JRPG, but that fails to live up to its own legend. It's a decent and entertaining adventure, with some interesting ideas, but it falls far short of the titans of the genre.

Manual dos Games - Luiz Henrique Silva - Portuguese - 9 / 10

FANTASIAN Neo Dimension is the ultimate RPG by Hironobu Sakaguchi, thanks to its emotionally compelling and well-told story, captivating characters, creative and unique combat mechanics, and, of course, a wonderful soundtrack composed by Nobuo Uematsu. It is impossible not to recommend FANTASIAN Neo Dimension to any fan of the genre, as it is a must-play title for those who long for more classic JRPGs.

MonsterVine - Nick Mangiaracina - 4 / 5

I think the audience for Fantasian knows what they’re looking for and they’re going to find it in Fantasian Neo Dimension. I su...
