Use this thread to discuss whatever game you've been playing lately: old or new, AAA or indie, on any platform between Atari and XBox. Please don't just list off the games you're playing in your comment. Elaborate with your thoughts on the games and make it easier for other users to find what game you're talking about by putting the title in bold.

Also, please make sure to use spoiler tags if you're revealing anything about a game's plot that may significantly impact another player's experience who has not played the game yet, no matter how retro or recent the game is. You can find instructions on how to do so in the subreddit sidebar.

This thread is set to sort comments by 'new' on default.

Hi! I'm the solo-indie developer of AETHUS, a chill sci-fi, physics-driven survival/base-building game, which I'm making pretty much on my own after leaving AAA after ~7 years, at studios like Rockstar North. I wanted to make a survival game that wasn't about combat, but about chill take-at-your-own-pace exploration, and a compelling narrative to drive you forward.

☑ Key Features:

  • Descend into the depths of an alien planet - Aethus - to mine for valuable resources in a tactile, physicalised world powered by Unreal Engine 5.
  • Utilise both your mining laser and explosives to gather resources, then Prospect your finds to discover the rarest ores and gem to package up according to demand in order to sell for maximum profit.
  • Construct your own outpost from the ground-up using the resources you mine from the planet, building highly customisable habitats to extend your reach underground, explore mysterious new biomes, and automate your gameplay.
  • Discover and purchase new plans for a wealth of habitats, facilities, furniture and decorations before using creative building and terraforming tools to create your perfect cosy and functional base.
  • After an expedition, process your haul back at base by constructing numerous types of facilities to refine raw materials, smelt and synthesise products, and craft new items!
  • Sell products to the Corporation to earn credits, then Upgrade your equipment to unlock powerful new abilities to aid in your mining efforts.
  • Experience a compelling dystopian narrative as you attempt to escape the grasp of your former employer, a planet-controlling, ultra-capitalist megacorp - ARC.

📽 The latest trailer shows a bunch of new features like hydroponic farming for food and crafting ingredients! I absolutely HATE making trailers (I love making the game!) so I hope it comes across OK!

🎮 The new demo lets you play the first 1-2 hours of the game as you set up your mining outpost on the surface of an alien planet and start delving into the depths of the caverns below it, and an introduction to the dystopian sci-fi narrative which drives the game forward! Oh, and it features a Scottish AI mining drone companion, so what's not to love?

✅ If you like what you see, consider giving the game a Wishlist on Steam! Every single one helps a solo-indie like me! 🙏

📣 I'd love to hear what you think about the game, either in the comments or perhaps 'face to face' on the Discord! - I really like getting any and all feedback, so I'd love to hear from you.

I nominated myself, of course. Just like everyone else did for The Game Awards for Games Who Can't Afford the Game Awards ().

Wish me luck, and please wishlist my game on Steam. It's my very first solo-dev project.

Imagine an RTS where you can’t directly control your troops. Instead, you can only ask and motivate them. In Lessaria, your heroes lead their own lives — you build shops for them, help them level up and grow stronger, but you can’t command them directly. If you’ve played Majesty, you know what we’re talking about. We’ve taken everything great about this classic RTS and made it deeper and more engaging.

  • Steam:
  • YouTube:

Each hero in the game is born with unique perks. Depending on their actions, the adventures they undertake, and how they level up, they become even more distinctive. In Lessaria, no two mages or warriors will ever be the same.

You can dive into each hero's adventure log to discover their personal story — what they've experienced in the game and how it has shaped them.

Next week, we’re kicking off a new playtest! Visit our page, add the game to your wishlist, and sign up for the playtest. We’d love to hear your feedback!

Hi there, I have been leading a small team developing The Necromancer’s Tale for the last 4 years. We’re getting close to completion now (we’re aiming for NextFest in June 2025 and for the game launch shortly after that). Meanwhile there is a ~3 hour demo available here.

Trailer:https://youtu.be/wjO-Bx1pDFs

It’s a story-rich game, focused on social intrigue, secrecy and blackmail more than on combat. This is reflected in the 9 attributes that your character has in the game: three physical, three intellectual, and three social.

There’s 180+ NPCs, each with unique portraits and sub-plots. During most of the game, you will need to keep your illegal activities secret from the townsfolk, even as you blackmail and manipulate them to achieve your goals. The game’s Trust system reflects how the various factions in the city view you, and your conversational/gameplay options are affected by it. (i.e., choices matter). Trust is affected by what you say as well as what activities you are witnessed performing (and by whom).

We’re close to completing the narrative content, which will come in at around 400,000 words in total. This has been written by a team of 8 part-time writers, led by me and Dave (writer of The Darkside Detective).

Here’s the overworld map, from concept to (almost) completion:

Here's some combat footage (it's turn based):

Combat will be optional as there is a ‘narrative mode’ you can pick, whereby combats are automatically resolved by calculating the ‘combat ratings’ of the opposing forces. This ensures that researching back magic and building your undead horde is still central to progressing in the game, even without combat.

Discussion and timeline for final development, testing, and release.

About Me

I've been making computer games in 6 different decades now: 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s.

First games were in high school on an 8kb Wang computer in BASIC.

After saving up money from summer jobs, I finally could afford an Apple II and started making games on it – 6502 machine code. Couldn't afford an assembler at first so just typed in the 6052 hex codes - remember many of them - $4C is JMP - $20 is JSR - $60 is RTS.

Then started up Dynamix with friends and made games for Electronic Arts, Activision, and Sierra. EA was kind of fun because it wasn't really big back then. They had a Marble Madness machine because Will Harvey was doing a port of it for the Amiga. Finally got to final scene and won without having to spend any quarters.

Bobby Kotick was my roommate at one of the EA Artist Symposium things. This was before he bought Activision and before the Game Developers Conferences (which have become huge nowadays). Had interesting late night talks.

Now I'm doing a mixture of working on my own games and helping friends with dev on their games.

It is still fun and I think I have a few decades of gamedev still left in me.
