I have a NAS as my primary photo backup solution and one day someone will make a photo frame that I can point at it and it will just cycle through photos, but until that day, it's just a blackhole of memories. That said, that blackhole is important enough to me that I also back up online.

That said, given the new AI race, it's less safe than ever before and I'm seeking somewhere I can stick my photos and videos really cheaply and securely. Somewhere with pedigree that seems like it would be around in ten years. Also, someone with a modern design team so the app doesn't look like shit (preferably an open source Material You app targetting Android 14) and I can get notifications with daily memories.

To be eligible for things like a GDPR Data deletion request etc, is it enough that I am a citizen or must I be a resident? ty :)

Ok I have a question. I'm kinda a noob when it comes to privacy. I'll follow the guides and do the things to try to minimize ad companies selling my data etc.

Some basic stats: I have a Samsung running stock android. My GF has an iPhone. I use brave as my standard browser (I know that's not super popular but I haven't made the move to Firefox yet.) I have DNS level ad blocking on my router cause I hate ads with a passion. She uses safari.

So here's the deal. I was browsing the web looking for gift ideas for Christmas and came across some moccasins I liked. I mentioned to her that I liked them and browsed their website for a few minutes.

About 10 minutes after that, she's checking her Instagram and sees an ad for the exact brand of moccasin I just told her about. Just for kicks, she also checks her Facebook and sees the same ad there (makes sense cause it's the same company).

My question is basically how on earth did she get an ad for something I looked up? And how can we prevent that from happening? It's very very disconcerting to have ads pop up on others' phones right after looking that thing up.

I have released the version 1.0 of what I call The Privacy DNS Chooser Script. This very simple but very easy to use CLI script allows you to choose Quad9, Mullvad DNS and NextDNS (more coming soon!) and use them on Linux with the systemd-resolved package (which is nowadays installed on all Linux distros, except Debian).

One of the cool features of the script is an NextDNS integration. This means that when the user chooses NextDNS to use it, the script will ask him to enter his configuration number (e.g. a12345)

Also, if you are in trouble (like if your Internet’s not working anymore after running the script). There’s a “rescue script” which will recover /etc/systemd/resolved.conf to his default state. Thus recovering your internet connection.

Why did I make this script? Well, I think on Linux, we are very late when it comes to setting up a DNS provider. We can only set up an IP address as an DNS while on Windows 11 and macOS Ventura, we have the ability to use DNS-over-HTTPS and DNS-over-TLS which are way more secure ways of using DNS, directly into a GUI. Where on Linux, the only way to do that is via, you guessed it : /etc/systemd/resolved.conf a.k.a. systemd-resolved.

Upcoming features for the script :

• Add Support for AdGuard (should come out at the end of the year)
• Add options for the user to choose the Ad, Tracker and Malware blocking version of Mullvad DNS or the standard non-blocking DNS (Early January 2024)
• Add Cloudflare and ControlD support (March/April 2024)

A PasswordCard is a credit card-sized card you keep in your wallet, which lets you pick very secure passwords for all your websites, without having to remember them! You just keep them with you, and even if your wallet does get stolen, the thief will still not know your actual passwords.

A very cute idea, well implemented.

Your PasswordCard has a unique grid of random letters and digits on it. The rows have different colors, and the columns different symbols. All you do is remember a combination of a symbol and a color, and then read the letters and digits from there. It couldn't be simpler!

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. It's far safer to pick secure passwords and write them down, than it is to remember simple and easy to guess passwords. You already protect your wallet very well, and even if it does get stolen the thief will still not know which of the many thousands of possibilities on the card is your password.

I honestly feel defeated right now, it feels like currently it's impossible to truly stay private online unless one is willing to move to a cabin in the woods with no internet and you stop using tech all together and truly become a ghost and stay offline. Can someone help me feel like everything I am currently doing is actually making a difference? Because right now it doesn't feel like it.

Every year or so I try one or more privacy focused keyboards. I always end up right back on SwiftKey after a couple of weeks because most of the keyboards I try have the same problem: the predictions suck.

Ok, I get that surveillance is good for predictions. Put another way, predictions are tough without collecting everything everyone types. Is there a best-of-both-worlds keyboard out there? I'd be patient enough to give it some time to learn how I type and get better.

How do notifications work in the official Telegram Android app (Play Store vs Site version maybe)? Does it have the same mechanism as Signal, which only recognizes the presence of notifications via Google services, but sends them via its web socket service?

The stalker then went on to threaten the victim and ended up driving to where he believed the victim lived while armed with a knife

Version Security Assistance Team–Court Order Compliance Team (or VSAT CCT) received an email from steven1966c@proton.me.“Here is the pdf file for search warrant,” Glauner, allegedly pretending to be a police detective, wrote in the email. “We are in need if the this [sic] cell phone data as soon as possible to locate and apprehend this suspect. We also need the full name of this Verizon subscriber and the new phone number that has been assigned to her. Thank you.”

Verizon is not the only telecom that has failed to properly verify requests like this. In a somewhat similar case, I spoke to a victim who was stalked after someone posing as a U.S. Marshal tricked T-Mobile into handing over her phone’s location data.

Recently been checking out PIA VPN service(for research purposes), and they advertise their services to be 100% open source. However when checking their Github they don't seem to have their code base for website there.

So this have had me wondering, when you hear the term 100% open source. Do you expect ALL of what they do, including website part, to be open source? Or just the application / service that they offer?

This has been one of the key features I've been waiting for to finally be able to move away from Google Photos and OneDrive for mobile photos backup.

I've used a VPN on individual devices for some time now. Every once in a while I come across a website that says it's blocking my access because of my IP address. I then change to another server until one isn't flagged anymore. The problem is there isn't one server that's free from this issue.

I am now going to add a VPN to my router to cover my whole network. Is there an easy way to fix this issue from my router? Like a way to cycle IPs automatically? I suppose if worse cones to worse I could activate a client side VPN again to overwrite my IP. My new router is a GL.iNet Flint 2.
