I'm not ready to drop reddit entirely and to create accounts there I need an email address. I don't want to disclose my phone number or any other personal information.

I tried i2p, but for whatever reason, mail from reddit doesn't get its way to the inbox.

What other providers could I use?

Has anyone heard of this AppCrypt by Cisdem? I'm normally wary of things not FOSS and I couldn't find much information about the app or the company.

I like that I can require authentication (screen unlock) for certain apps on my phone, so I can hand it to my kids and know they aren't opening my work email, etc. I'd like to be able to do that for my desktop as well.

First off wanted to say thank you for everyone who chimed in on my last post a while ago starting my privacy journey

Anyways with my classes starting up again I was looking for a OneNote alternative as I almost had a small oopsy daisy with trying to move my OneNote off of OneDrive and hey Microsoft I appreciate backing up files but I have proton drive for that

Anyways as for a one note alternative stuff I do have a few requirements and preferences:

  1. I use a surface with a touchscreen and a fold back keyboard to use as a tablet and a pen for handwriting notes but I also like to type sometimes so something that has palm rejection and plays nice with with the touchscreen

  2. I use it across multiple devices, mainly note taking on the aforementioned surface laptop but also view them on my home computer since I do some schoolwork on that because nice monitor and keyboard :) but I’m mostly just viewing on that computer - basically I would either like cloud saving to get that across devices OR the ability to save the files to proton drive

  3. Not really a necessity but the ability to organize notes like one note where I can have a “book” > “category/chapter” > “page”

Really point 1 and 2 are my priority but if I had to choose I’d say point 1 with playing nice for the touch screen and pen takes priority but I also definitely wouldn’t mind having something that makes it easy to save with ideally a cloud save that does the work for me but I’m probably capable of setting the directory to save it to proton drive

Unfortunately the Wickrme app is no longer available as of 31/12/2023.

Does anyone have any recommended alternatives?

Does any of you know firsthand how the ad industry works? I hate them with all my heart and I already go out of my way to block them but maybe you have been on the other side of the fence and can share some internal insight on what to focus on to really disrupt the data collection. I.e. even if I use uBlock can the ad network still build a profile? Is the benefit only cosmetic on my end? I also run a local AdGuard instance on my network

Typically, my ISP provides ~500mbps down, but Mullvad seems to struggle to get above 220mbps. Is this typical?

I want to route all network traffic through it on the router, but don't want to miss out on the download speeds I'm paying for.

I'm looking for a vacuum robot preferably under 500€ and with a cleaning station. My main concern is that most robot vacuum providers seem to need to be connected to the internet. Are there any providers that either don't need that, where I can block the internet connection or any other way not getting a spy in my home? I'm fine with it if some work is needed

I've been using this app for quite a while now, and I like the way it's designed, but I'm wondering if there's a better equivalent.

Lately I've noticed some mainstream sites injection tracking links into literally every link on their site.

When I hover over it, it shows the correct link at the bottom of my browser, but if I click it or copy it, it takes me to a hijacked tracker link.

Then I can't even get the original link without having my activity tracked.

How do I get the original link that appears at the bottom of my browser?

Edit 1 :

@AteshgaRubyTeeth@lemmy.world.

If you’re fed up with companies fucking you over there’s an alternative.

There software called Nextcloud which you can run on a server which works in comparable ways as Onedrive/Google Drive/Dropbox/etc. works.

You could host it yourself on a server if you know how.

If you’re not familiar with forwarding ports or setting static IP adresses you can rent some server space from Hetzner where Nextcloud is included.

Edit 2 :

@TheFederatedPipe@kbin.social

I’m totally in favor with your post, but not everyone is willing to self-host or is capable of doing it. So I recommendation would be and one that I’m currently using, is when uploading a file to these cloud services encrypt your files. I’m using #cryptomator, but I’m sure there are other alternatives, like #rclone. There is also #veracrypt, but to my understanding, is not great for cloud sync.

Cryptomator official website Quick youtube video in how to use cryptomator (3:51)

Cryptomator is open source and free, but only on desktop. To use the mobile version, you will have to pay. Here is a list of alternatives to cryptomator, if you are familiar with one, please share your knowledge.

Edit 3 :

@danileonis@lemmy.ml

Don’t forget Syncthing, I always suggest it first since it doesn’t require a server or advanced knowledge to work.

A controversial developer circumvented one of Mastodon's primary tools for blocking bad actors, all so that his servers could connect to Threads.

We’ve criticized the security and privacy mechanisms of Mastodon in the past, but this new development should be eye-opening. Alex Gleason, the former Truth Social developer behind Soapbox and Rebased, has come up with a sneaky workaround to how Authorized Fetch functions: if your domain is blocked for a fetch, just sign it with a different domain name instead.

Gleason was originally investigating Threads federation to determine whether or not a failure to fetch posts indicated a software compatibility issue, or if Threads had blocked his server. After checking some logs and experimenting, he came to a conclusion.

“Fellas,” Gleason writes, “I think threads.net might be blocking some servers already.”

What Alex found was that Threads attempts to verify domain names before allowing access to a resource, a very similar approach to what Authorized Fetch does in Mastodon.

You can see Threads fetching your own server by looking at the facebookexternalua user agent. Try this command on your server:

grep facebookexternalua /var/log/nginx/access.log

If you see logs there, that means Threads is attempting to verify your signatures and allow you to access their data.

As per title, how do y'all protect your privacy? ... do not disclose your personal data tho haha

For example: besides a VPN i started using Matrix for messaging and Keybase for encrypted storage instead of telegram and google drive, and I self host most of the hosting I need including my own mail server and nextcloud appliance.

I am curious, show me how you hide!

My mom got me the spot gen 4 for Christmas. Im out in the middle of nowhere a lot of the time and am interested in having it for emergencies or communicating when I have no signal however I am not a fan of being tracked on the go. Is there anything to be concerned of with these type of products? Id say yes but I cant find anything online.
