(Reposting @buyeuropean@feddit.org's post to federate sticky post and adding a bit of new info. Here you can find the original post.

Additionally: A link to a post where the dev answers questions about buy-european.net's philosophy and reasoning around their decisions.

We worked the last months on a new completely ad-free database for European products, brands, services and companies. A few days ago we released the site. The website focuses on usability with a simple search form and a clear structure. After the technical development we are now in the process of filling the database with content. The website is currently available in English and German!

You can also submit your own suggestions for European products, Non-European products that you try to find alternatives to, and categories that may be missing.

If you have any feedback, we would appreciate it. If you like it and want to share it, we appreciate that too. :)

Thanks in advance!

For the people who were using FREENOW (originally from Germany), I just received a notification on the app saying it is now being acquired by Lyft, an American company.

Just thought I'd share it here.

Today I went to my local supermarket and was presented with the following brands of toothpaste:

  • Odol-med3 (Aquafresh): Haleon Group ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง
  • Sensodyne: Haleon Group ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง
  • Parodontax: Haleon Group ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง
  • Signal: Unilever ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง
  • elmex: Colgate-Palmolive ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ
  • Meridol: Colgate-Palmolive ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ
  • Colgate: Colgate-Palmolive ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ
  • Blend-a-med: Procter & Gamble ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ
  • Blend-a-dent: Procter & Gamble ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ
  • Crest: Procter & Gamble ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ
  • Lacalut: Dr. Theiss Naturwaren Gruppe ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช

You have a big illusion of choice, but in the end most known brands that can also afford advertising are big international groups. I ended up getting Lacalut, the one "made in germany", which cost double.

edit: apparently it's not a great choice for many reasons, so i'll be returning that product and try some of the other recommendations, thanks!

Not only software and FMCG! Support EU artisans and manufacturers!

Hello, is there any social media on this planet that does not ban people for things that are completely legal in all of the European legal systems?

Or is the fediverse the best choice because even though if moderators guide public opinion on the mainstream instances, people can still go to a smaller instance for refuge.

Fingers crossed this community will find this useful: https://gohug.eu/

It's intended as liberated start page to discover non-US search engine alternatives and the latest community posts. It's part of my personal journey of changing my old ways - switching to Vivaldi (Firefox once/if manifest v2 gets dropped), using Qwant & Mistral, joining this community.

https://gohug.eu/join is a collection of related lemmy posts, reddit posts, and misc bookmarks that I thought might be handy to look up from time to time again. Mostly broader meta-posts and tools. I'm constantly adding new gems from this awesome community.

When I joined I just got excited - still am - and desperately wanted to give something back. If somebody finds this useful I am more than happy.

Glass canning jars are absolutely ridiculous here in Belgium. I garden and I am going to scale up my gardening next year, so I need to get into canning and preserving again.

If you live in the US, you could get a 12 pack of standard mason jars in a store for https://www.target.com/p/ball-16oz-12pk-glass-regular-mouth-mason-jar-with-lid-and-band/-/A-12794405 under $15.

Here, any sort of glass jar is no cheaper than 20โ‚ฌ for 6 online and in stores it is often 5-10โ‚ฌ per jar, depending on size!! That is 300% more expensive on the cheap end here. It is not super sustainable to have to spend 200 euros on glass jars to can your extra fruit and vegetables.

Is there a secret to finding reasonably-priced glass canning jars that some people have found? I would reuse glass jars that I get from the store, but you are not supposed to reuse the lids because they degrade and will let in harmful bacteria and let things oxidize.

I'm hosting my domains, websites and primarily my (and my families email) with Domain Factory. But now they are migrating their mail to Microsoft 365. I really don't like that.

Do you have suggestions for a European hoster?

What do I need? It's basically just lot's of mail storage and SSL certificates for domains. Webspace i don't need that much, maybe 100 MB.

Edit: Thank you all very much! I think I'm going with Hetzner, because it's data centers are not far from where we live.
